Re: Random musings
If you microwave it and finish it under a broiler to get the outside crispy it saves time but approximates the quality of fully oven-baked potato. This is how I've seen it done at some restaurants that need to pre-cook and reheat baked or twice-baked potatoes since an hour+ cook on a side dish is a non-starter.

I do at least once a week.
Once at at work pot-luck, a guy put a casserole dish of tamales into the microwave for 10 or 12 minutes or something. I was in awe of someone typing such large numbers into the microwave.
I think we shut the microwave off after 5 or six minutes as they were popping and bubbling as if they were hot.
You need probably 4-5 minutes for a potato. I usually do mine for 4 then stick the fork in it to see if it's soft. If not I'll do another minute or so.

Our microwave is used mainly for reheating coffee that's gone cold and defrosting frozen broth. Hubby likes to cook. I like to let him!

Re: Random musings
I think the problem here isn't zapping whole potatoes in the microwave, it's the fact that the microwave overlords falsely call this a 'baked' potato.
If the function of the button were true to it's name, pressing it would result in a 60-65 timer to use while your potatoes bake in the oven.
No foil, obviously, but that's a topic for another day.

I always stab them with a fork several times before nuking so hot vapors in the inside can escape more easily. That's my theory anyway.IMADreamer wrote:Donnie Ebert wrote:In the spirit of science, I feel I have to try this tomorrow.IMADreamer wrote:Donnie Ebert wrote:Why do most microwaves have a "Baked Potato" button? We microwave our potatoes for about 4 minutes then rub with olive oil and kosher salt and finish in the oven.

I only like butter and salt and pepper on my baked potatoes.
I am sorry.
