Did I miss this? Heyward didn't like the clubhouse atmosphere?
i thought it was written that heyward felt like he didnt fit in here and wasnt too keen on the whole fellowship of christian athletes thing matheny was shoving down everyone's throat.

It could be speculation, but maybe I don't see it as "wild" speculation, if that makes sense. He's been around Matheny for a long time and would certainly know his personality. He's had, I would venture, more than just a passing interaction with Fowler the past two seasons.

I certainly know the importance of clicks/likes/etc., but I've not sure I've ever met someone in all my media experience who's exaggerated or fabricated to do so. I've seen it from the national media-- which I have no experience with-- but not local, like Bernie.

I'm not sure why it's safe to assume that Bernie has more than a passing interaction with Fowler. Why would he?

Bernie didn't necessarily fabricate or exaggerate anything. He likely read the speculation somewhere, and is assuming there's something to it, and is repeating it. Maybe he just has a gut feeling. Again, it would be completely different if he had said "sources have told me". He didn't say that.
About 40 games or so of Cubs-Cardinals the past two seasons, postseason included.

I would call that mostly passing interaction.
We'll have to agree to disagree on that one.

Heyward is an open Christian himself.

Heyward said Cubs core was better, essentially implying he didn't want to be a part of the leadership core. I don't recall any negativity said at all.

That was speculated on GRB when some of Heyward's comments came out and then it was proven not to be true. It was about Cubs young core vs. the Cards aged core.

And he was right.

(Or what BW said... didn't read all the way to the bottom).

That's not how MLB payrolls work though, is it?

Nothing was proven one way or another. Heyward is too gracious and polite a human to talk bad about Matheny. It's a fair point, however, that we should not just assume that Heyward didn't like Matheny and the Cards atmosphere and go with what Heyward actually said.

Unless the cards plan on trading for a middle of the order bat then signing a guy like fowler for $20m/y makes 0 sense to me. It reeks of signing player just to sign a player. I'm not sure how many years fowler is wanting but does he really put us over the top this year or next year? No, it doesn't IMO.

So we can spend $30 million (or more) for a top 5 type player, if/when he ever becomes available. And even if we sign Fowler, we'll still have that money available next year.

$20 million isn't an amount to hesitate over these days if you're the Cardinals and have a chance to get a proven, All-Star capable player who fills a need.
