Re: The Official GRB 2017 Golf Thread
Got out and played on Friday and a guy sent me this video of a tee shot. It was pretty easily the worst one of the day as I never got around on it and blocked it right, but watching slow mo vids of yourself is mesmerizing....at least for me it is.

It was the cargo shorts. The completely screw up your swing. Trust me, I know. I've never played in anything but cargo shorts and I've never been any good so the answer is obviously cargo shorts cause bad golf swings.

Actually the swing isn't bad at all. Take this w/ a grain of salt, but you could maybe use stand a few inches closer to the ball when addressing it, but your takeaway looked good. You could probably generate a little more power if you brought the club back parallel to the ground, but your follow through was good as well.
If you notice when you address the ball its alignment to the club head is at the toe of the club....more often than not, that will cause it to be pushed right (as it was in this case).

Re: The Official GRB 2017 Golf Thread
I think I need to hit the course and take video of my swing for cardinalkarp to analyze. I actually downloaded an app on my phone/tablet a couple of years ago to use to analyze my swing but then pretty much stopped playing other than our yearly tournament. I also have an app for my watch that will use the sensors in the watch to record the swing path and such but once again, I never play these days.
I've been getting the urge to play a lot more recently since my swing felt much better at our tournament a few weeks ago and I was hitting the ball really well compared to the past few years thanks to just being able to swing more freely after losing some weight. So of course I turn around and get myself stuck wearing a walking boot for the next few weeks. Guess golf won't happen this weekend.

I'm letting you know in advance I am in absolutely no way a golf instructor....lol
It's hard for me to show anyone in person what or how to do something since I'm left handed.

Thanks. Yeah, I was way too far away from the ball and had it up in my stance even though you can't really see it from that angle trying to murder one. The thought being increased distance = longer swing = more club head speed.cardinalkarp wrote:Actually the swing isn't bad at all. I sent the vid to my brother who's a club pro and gives a ton of lessons and his immediate response was....WTF are you doing so far away? Then he went on to berate me for not getting through it...we got into a fight that I actually did transfer the weight to the front foot and got through it fine albeit late so he started sending me a ton of screen shots of where I should have been and what not. Blah blah blah. Typical fight. I'm going to have to take another slow mow this week to show him he's wrong, I'm getting through fine, and the awkward club angle into the ball and lateness is due to standing too far away and the increased distance throwing off my timing...not a the lower body quitting.
My buddy also took a couple slow mos of himself and some other guys we play with and none of us are very good. But, the video really helped show how he's not staying back. All those guys have a first move of weight to the front foot and left shoulder down as opposed to left hip rotate and right elbow into the slot....what I like to call the power position. Weight back, hip open, shoulder closed, right arm drops an inch or so....that's what I've always focused on. From there it's just letting the hands go and maintaining a solid front side to more or less drive yourself into.

For comparison. It's so easy to see but so difficult to explain. You can notice at the 10-11 second mark his unsubtle weight shift and left shoulder fire along with his hips.
If he could just be more balanced in general and stay back, he'd hit it an extra 50 yards.

Weight transfer, and clearing the hips are where you're going to generate all your power.
But like your brother said as well, that's the first thing I noticed was how far away from the ball you were.
Putting the ball up in your stance (meaning you're lining it up closer to your front foot) isn't necessarily going to generate more club speed, in fact could be the opposite as I would think the lowest point of the swing would generate the highest club speed; as the club is on it's way up it's decreasing in speed.
Having the ball up in your stance it going to typically create more loft to your shot and back in your stance the opposite (which is why you're lining the ball up at your back foot when punching under obstacles).
Longer swing does not always = harder swing....that goes for both baseball and golf.

His follow through was very baseball-esque.AWvsCBsteeeerike3 wrote:For comparison. It's so easy to see but so difficult to explain. You can notice at the 10-11 second mark his unsubtle weight shift and left shoulder fire along with his hips.

He's definitely bringing that club back to WAY past parallel and unless he's REALLY good, he's going to have trouble controlling where the ball goes (which like you said, he's losing balance because his backswing is too much and he's honestly just swinging to hard).
That wasn't the best example because he grounds the club probably a couple inches before striking the ball causing the club head to twist and resulting in a low hooking drive.
edit: as I said, take this w/ a grain of salt as I'm FAR from being anyone w/ the credentials to teach golf; you're brother I'm sure knows what he's talking about much more than I ever would
