Yeah the one in Tower Grove South is still open. That's the one I'm often at. Never been to the South County one. The city location is under new ownership but same management or something. There was a change maybe a year ago. Still my top choice for a Blues game, although I need to check out the new CenterIce Brewery for a game.Farewell Friends wrote:Friendly's is still open? Probably not breaking news, but Maggie O'Brien's is supposed to be a big Blues spot. I've only been once and they have terrific chicken strips.Hoot45 wrote:Yeah the one in Tower Grove South is still open. That's the one I'm often at. Never been to the South County one. I normally go to either Time Out at Gravois and Chippewa or Trophy Room at Arsenal and Brannon. Peppers is in the rotation as well but those are the main spots unless I have plans with other friends.Hoot45 wrote:What is your bar of choice for Blues games? So far I've watched 3 of the 4 games this season from a bar and they've won them all so let's make it 4 out of 5!

When I lived downtown I used to go to Maggie O'Brien's once a week for happy hour with people from work and it was great. I haven't been there much in years though. I think they still draw a pretty good Blues crowd especially with their shuttle.Farewell Friends wrote:Probably not breaking news, but Maggie O'Brien's is supposed to be a big Blues spot. I don't remember the chicken strips but the O'Hennessy and Shamrock were two of the best 'sandwiches' of all time back in the day. I don't know if they still even offer them but those used to be my go-to meals when I lived a couple blocks away.

I prefer the south city alcoholics with tourettes scene more than the bro hockey club at Maggie's purely for my own entertainment. But Maggie's is a good place to catch a game for sure.Farewell Friends wrote:Probably not breaking news, but Maggie O'Brien's is supposed to be a big Blues spot. Re: 2017-2018 Blues (Hockey) Season
There are places in South City where even if the game isn't entertaining because the Blues look terrible, the fans you're watching the game with pick up the slack when it comes to entertainment.
Trophy Room has a pretty good group that shows up for every Blues game and they have their own little pool for each game. It isn't big stakes but each person puts in $1 and picks a player. Nobody can have the same player so it helps to get there early if you want one of the bigger names. During the game they have a point system that they track and at the end of the game it's winner take all (split in case of a tie). I have played a few times and won once. The pot was about $10. Nothing huge but still made the game a little more interesting.
Unfortunately I don't go to Trophy Room as often as I'd like because they are cash only since I never have cash on me and would rather just run up a tab and swipe it on my debit card at the end of the night. My dislike of cash only is that I tend to get conflicted with regards to tipping at cash only places that don't let you run up a tab. Do I tip on every drink? Do I try and keep track and tip accordingly at the end of the night? It's too much for me to have to think about when I'm drinking, too much pressure to not be stupid with my money (tipping $1/beer that costs $2.50 for example) but I also don't want to be cheap since tips are where their money is. What I finally started doing is drinking in $20 increments. After I break a $20, I'll drink until there is $5 or so left, tip that and then start over. That has helped... but how many cycles do I plan for so that I'm not hitting the ATM multiple times while I'm there. Although the ATM fees shouldn't bother me because at the end of the month, I get it all back anyway.

I understand a place being cash only but they should still allow you to run up a tab and pay for it all with cash at the end of the night.

They may, especially for regulars but I've never asked since my first time there and was not given the option. It's about time I ask again now that I'm starting to go there a little more than every six months and the bartenders actually know me.JoeMcKim wrote:I understand a place being cash only but they should still allow you to run up a tab and pay for it all with cash at the end of the night.

It wasn't until I read this page of the thread that I realized that I haven't been to Friendlies since game 7 of the 2011 WS. I'll have to head down there this year to catch a game since it isn't far. I'll look for a guy who probably doesn't look like Bob Gibson pretending to be Billy Dee Williams. You'll know me because I'm the guy who doesn't look like David Hasselhoff, Gary Coleman or William Daniels pretending to be a car.

First round is on me for so perfectly understanding my subtly photoshopped avatar. We might be soulmates. The beer will help sort all that out. BARTENDER, a round for my friend who doesn't look like David Hasselhoff, Gary Coleman or William Daniels pretending to be a car PRONTO!JCShutout wrote:It wasn't until I read this page of the thread that I realized that I haven't been to Friendlies since game 7 of the 2011 WS.
