FWIWPerhaps the team most often suggested as Jeter’s first trade partner, the Cardinals interest in Stanton has been well reported, and John Mozeliak has admitted that they’re going to try to make a substantial trade before November 20th, when 40 man rosters have to be set in preparation for the Rule 5 draft. The Cardinals want to make a consolidation trade, moving multiple guys for one impact player, so in addition to Stanton, they’ll probably call on every big name player that could theoretically be available.
That probably includes guys like Josh Donaldson and Manny Machado, both of whom could be free agents next winter; the Cardinals do have a history of trading for impending free agents and then convincing them to stick around St. Louis long-term, after all. And with a number of interesting young players — especially outfielders — to dangle, the Cardinals will probably be having trade discussions with a bunch of teams even after they figure out which impact player they can most reasonably acquire. If their big bat acquisition ends up being Stanton (or another outfielder), they’ll probably have a few more trades to make after that, and could end up being the center of the OF market for the next couple of months.

Re: Cardinals/Marlins Offseason Dance - aka Stanton Thread
I thought the Cardinals discussing trade with Stanton was important enough to merit it's own thread.
Stanton getting traded this offseason seems like a real opportunity and the Cardinals are at least reported to have interest.
It'll most likely turn into another one of those "we were in it until the end" type of things that the Cardinals have every offseason. But one can hope, and it's absolutely worth discussing. If the Marlins are trying to shed payroll then someone is going to end up with Stanton.

It's going to come down to Stanton being willing to take a deal to STL IMO. The other most serious suitor is the Giants who don't have the prospects we have to offer. Maybe something will change between now and then, but that's how I see it at this time.
That said, if Stanton isn't willing to waive his NTC, it could be (emphasis on the "could") indicative of a bigger problem with the perception of this organization as it stands today.

Assuming young talented pitching is likely at the center of a trade, striking early with some starting pitching in the free agency market might help the sales pitch.MrCrowesGarden wrote:It's going to come down to Stanton being willing to take a deal to STL IMO. One way MoG can approach this offseason is to buy his free agents early, then go after Stanton with offers that include some of our top young pitchers, and then move on to plans B, C, etc if Stanton (or Jeter) still won't accept. What I would fear is they trade some of that young pitching (Reyes +) for Stanton first, and he either balks at coming to St. Louis because it doesn't look like we have a good shot to win, or he does accept but we're still left with a rotation of Martinez-Wacha-Weaver and none of the pitching prospects (esp. Reyes) to help fill out the rotation.
(I don't love the ideas of Stanton's contract + parting with Reyes + SP free agent contracts. That's not my style. But it's not my money, and we're talking about how to land The Big Fish so this is the best idea I got.)

I'm fine with giving up Reyes in the deal, provided the Marlins take on at least some (20-25%) of the contract. I'd still rather just take on the whole damn thing and give up a lesser player, but I think that's less likely (and I still think the impact bat is the biggest priority.)

I can't wrap my head around the Stanton talks being real. It always just seems like fantasy to land someone of that caliber. I don't want to get my hopes up.
I would definitely give up Reyes although it would probably hurt a little watching him be a stud elsewhere.

I think the problem I have with giving up Reyes to save money on the Stanton contract is that anything you save, you probably just need to turn around and spend on pitching anyway. We are already hurting for innings. So if Reyes is included in a trade I would think the Cardinals would need to save more on the Stanton contract than it would cost to replace Reyes with free agent singings. That's all assuming the Marlins are even interested in any deal that doesn't involve Reyes of course.MrCrowesGarden wrote:I'm fine with giving up Reyes in the deal, provided the Marlins take on at least some (20-25%) of the contract. Maybe it is the organization. Maybe it is the location. I think it differs every time. Sometimes when players get to name 5 teams, they'll name the 5 teams most likely to trade for them just so that they can have leverage to demand something to waive their no-trade clause.MrCrowesGarden wrote: That said, if Stanton isn't willing to waive his NTC, it could be (emphasis on the "could") indicative of a bigger problem with the perception of this organization as it stands today.
