I was listening to MLB Radio today, and I didn't catch the name but they had some sort of Giants beat writer or reporter on. He said like the Cardinals, the ownership group noticed lower attendance this season. But, because the Giants paid for the stadium themselves, they have more incentive to not sit around and tank like the Cubs or Astros. They said something like the Giants can stomach one bad season like last year, but they can't do it for two or more.pioneer98 wrote:IF the Giants get Stanton....The Giants to me look a lot like the Angels when Albert went there. Yes, there are differences. The Giants are probably in better shape right now than the Angels were then. And Stanton is younger than Albert was when he went to the Angels. But the Giants' stars are older (Trout was just 21 then, Bumgarner is 28 and Posey is 30). If the Giants get him, this is obviously a "win now" move. Bumgarner and Posey are free agents in the next few years. So I guess the hope is Stanton opts out after 3 years and then maybe it's time for a full rebuild? The thing about the Giants that reminds me most of the Angels is the Giants' lack of depth, and not many prospects on the horizon. It will be a couple star players, a handful of average players around them and then scrambling to plug holes with random guys. Maybe they trade Shark or Cueto for younger depth players, but those are players you generally keep when in "win now" mode. Another thing is that the Angels didn't have a team like the Dodgers in their division. I would not bet on the Giants overtaking the Dodgers even if they get Stanton and get rebounds from the players who had down seasons.Farewell Friends wrote:Okay. Those are certainly points. But Stanton and a full season of Bumgarner doesn't get them to 85 wins, much less 80.Popeye_Card wrote:Counterpoint. They also have one of the top starting pitchers and the best catcher in the game.
Though I trust Bob Nightengale about as far as I can throw him.

The Miami Herald previously reported that the Marlins want to trade Stanton, Gordon and third baseman Martin Prado in an attempt to trim payroll from $115 million to $90 million.
According to Mish, the Giants are offering right-hander pitcher Tyler Beede and left-handed hitting outfielder/first baseman Chris Shaw, in addition to Panik, but the Giants want both Stanton and Gordon in return.
LOL at that package.

Feeling more and more like this is about money.

Certainly. If they're absorbing $340 million in contracts and pushing their payroll north of $220 million they don't have to give up anything.MinorLeagueGuy wrote:Feeling more and more like this is about money.
ETA: The Cards should be willing to take on Gordon, too.

Agreed. But if Stanton is intent on not playing in STL, neither the Marlins nor Cards can do anything about that.Socnorb11 wrote:Spider John wrote:http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/spt-c ... 30273.htmlThe San Francisco Giants have offered second baseman Joe Panik and two prospects for Stanton and second baseman Dee Gordon, according to Sirius XM Radio’s Craig Mish.

I think we were when Wong was going back and forth to the DL, and we were kinda still fighting to stay in it. But as it stands now, their prolly going to give Wong the benefit of the doubt this spring.Farewell Friends wrote:Certainly. According to the snippet, the Giants WANT Gordon. They're not just willing to absorb the contract. It sounds to me like they think he's value added.
I still think it's going to take some value prospects to land Stanton, regardless of money exchanged.

The Marlins could just keep him.

That does not seem sustainable. Just by chance you'd think they'd have 2 down years in a row, especially when they are coming off one.

Imagine being a Marlins fan and watching your team take a garbage trade package for your best player so they don't have to spend as much money. And the team was already mediocre before doing this. If they take that Giants offer, they're not even getting 1 guy they could build around.
