Except that the "us" and "we" that you talk about isn't really "us" and "we". "We" aren't going to have to pay a penny of it, the Cardinals are. It's just Monopoly money to "us", so it's easy to say that it's not a factor.MinorLeagueGuy wrote:With new t.v. deals these teams know exactly what that side of the business will bring in. Nothing should keep us from taking every cent of that deal, if we think he's a necessary piece.

But when fans don't spend their real money, it's got a tangible effect.

If there were no other options, I might agree. But, there are other options. Some of which are almost certainly better options long term for the Cards. I'm just not going to criticize the Cards for not being willing to take on the whole thing and commit themselves to one player for what might be the entirety of the next generation of Cards baseball. That's not a very smart strategy.MinorLeagueGuy wrote:With new t.v. deals these teams know exactly what that side of the business will bring in. No variables; exact numbers. Now, if they feel like they're in a place financially where they can take on the deal and still do what they want with their roster, great. But, if they balk, it's not a sign that they don't care or are cheap. It's a sign that they think Stanton will hamstring their roster for a decade. I'm not going to sit here and say that they were wrong about that. Because they'll probably be right. These mega deals almost always turn out bad.
Now... if they balk on the price for Stanton and then move on to Carlos Gonzalez, while trading away our OF'ers for random returns, then they'll be wrong. But, we'll just have to see what happens.

Get back to me when that happens, I guess. When those effects kick in, ownership will probably adjust. It hasn't happened, to this point, and I don't see it happening.

You think it's already started?
Attendance was exactly the same in 2017 as it was in 2016, and both of those years were pretty much on par or higher than previous years.
Or maybe I'm missing your point?

I had a bunch of tickets to a Cardinals game in September. I had numerous people decline tickets because "the Cardinals suck now".
And that was a common theme I heard this year amongst bandwagon fans.

Stated attendance was the same, but the stands weren't full. That means the tickets had been bought, but they aren't making money off of concessions, souvenirs, etc.
