This is why you don't trade Carpenter.

Angels signed Zack Cozart to a 3-year deal.

Yeah, I would have figured him more in the range of 4/$60MM. The deal he got wouldn't have broke the Cardinals, but it is a lot to commit to a guy who can only play 1B in the NL. Him being on the roster prevents you from sliding other guys (like Carpenter) down the defensive spectrum.Fat Strat wrote:Ok, well that’s more than I would have wanted him for. I haven't heard a whisper of him connected to the Cardinals, and it would be hard to get NL playoff contenders to trade with each other, but if the Diamondbacks really have Greinke on the block-- and are even willing to take on a little bit of salary-- that's one we should be calling about yesterday.

I don't get how Cozart got 22 million less than Santana considering Santana's negative defensive value. They will both probably hover around 3 fWAR. Odd.
Longoria is still owed at least 85 million. No way.

We aren’t asking him to be Longoria, MVP candidate. Just a really good defender with some nice offensive skills at a position where we could still upgrade.
We have an opportunity to use our considerable depth - which is a rare thing, even for a team that develops talent well - to fill out a deep, stable, lineup. We should take it. That means grabbing one more good player in the right situation. Longoria - as opposed to Hosmer - fits that right situation.
