apologies....i didn't mean it to sound like we would sign him for that. that's just what boras on record asking for...and he seems to get teams to bid against themselves and drive up the price somehow.Magneto2.0 wrote:Cardinals are not giving Hosmer 200 million. At best we'll give him 5/100. I'm for it. It upgrades the team. And he's still young.cardsfantx wrote:yuckMrCrowesGarden wrote:
the obv best upgrade left is donaldson, BUT if the jays are truly not going to trade donaldson...then i dunno
i may throw up on my keyboard, but i'd rather have LoMo on a 2-3 year deal and hope last year wasn't a fluke, then to get stuck with a 7/200 deal that boras is going to try and hold out for with hosmer

i wouldn't...i'd sign LoMo at a fraction of that price for 2-3 years instead
I might actually do 5/100. I don't want to say yes for sure but there is a price where Hosmer would be worth it.

With the ways things are trending for these free agent non-pitchers, we should definitely be looking at adding another FA or two. Hosmer could end up being a real steal in another week or two. 4/$75 or 5/$90 would be a great contract for someone like Hosmer. Just a little more than what Fowler got.
The market for FA's has gotten so cold that some of them are going to start jumping at any deal that gives them long term security, even if it's less than they originally imagined.

Hosmer is repped by Boras so I wouldn't expect him to panic and sign early with a friendly deal. It's entirely possible if they don't get the kind of contract they want he'll sign a 1 year deal. Who knows with Boras.

I saw this on Twitter this morning and thought it was interesting:Fat Strat wrote:With the ways things are trending for these free agent non-pitchers, we should definitely be looking at adding another FA or two. And for the top 20 it's even more drastic for this year:
It certainly seems teams have recently been more willing to wait out players.

i either heard in on mlb network, or read it here...but all teams are more analytical now/view players more alike than in the past...so their views on what players are worth are more in line with all other teams.
so everyone's prob standing pat, and waiting for demands to drop to close to what they view the players are truly worth.
of course once a big name or 2 sign, we'll see how long they hold true to those values...

report is from nightengale, so...yeah...
Report: According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, free agent first baseman Eric Hosmer has a seven-year offer from the Padres.

Teams also have the luxury of being more patient than players.

Yeah, and not only that, but a lot of teams are drawing from the same information pool thanks to stuff like MLB Advanced Media. And probably other avenues we don't know about. It creates overlap specifically in what info the teams have.cardsfantx wrote:i either heard in on mlb network, or read it here...but all teams are more analytical now/view players more alike than in the past...so their views on what players are worth are more in line with all other teams.
And then, as you say, it ends up being 30 teams who each value players pretty much the same way. Even 10 years ago, or 5, all it took was one team to be stupid team who valued guys differently and it would help move the market along. But that doesn't happen nearly as much now.
