Would it matter if it was the other way around? BDW didn’t want to pay Robert because there was no guarantee he was going to be good (and would have to pay again if he was.) I suspect even if the pay scale was designed in favor of younger players that ownership would try to suppress salaries by saying they’d rather pay for a track record of success.

I don't think we're talking about paying big money to players who have never stepped foot in the big leagues. I'd be more in favor of paying 2nd and 3rd year players (etc.) what they are worth. A 25 year old Kris Bryant shouldn't have been making 14 million dollars less than a 35 year old Ben Zobrist.

The system isn't really "rigged", though. It's the exact system that the players agreed to.

Specifically, and not surprisingly, the MLBPA player reps - who are veterans - negotiated a system that rewards veterans, grossly underpays younger players, and conscripts amateur players into indentured servitude. The only surprise is that it took owners this long to compare player cost by age to productivity by age and realuze that they can rely much much less on veterans and save a ton of money.

The other thing that happened is players stopped taking steroids, and so the aging curve got a lot steeper again.

The answer is that you pay him at some point (after 2-4 years) if you want to keep him. You don't think there are teams that would have given him a blank check at age 25? Guarantee there were.

Add in a salary floor and a harder cap on the top end along with more revenue sharing so that yankees and dodgers don't just buy up all the players.

I would also like them to pay the players in the minors much more.
It is insane how little the players in the minors get paid.

Last year they got paid:

First pro contract: $1,100 per month
Rookie league/ Short season: $1150 per month
Low A: $1,300 per month
High A: $1,500 per month
Double-A: $1,700 per month
Triple-A: $2,150 per month, $2,400 second year, $2,700 third year
The salary increases $50 per month each year when repeating a level.
Players also receive a meal allowance of $25 per day while traveling.
