2000-2009 Pitcher Poll
Before another thread gets locked over the Pham trade discussion; let's do a poll. Like the one based on the opening day starters for the 1990s; this one takes the opening day starters from the 2000s. Let's see how they rank up against each other. Choose your starter based on the one you think was the best or the one that was your favorite and share your reasons below.
There are not ten options because some pitchers made more than one Opening Day start during the decade. For your information; the years and names of the pitchers who made each Opening Day start are listed below:
2000: Daryl Kile
2001: Daryl Kile
2002: Matt Morris
2003: Matt Morris
2004: Matt Morris
2005: Chris Carpenter
2006: Chris Carpenter
2007: Chris Carpenter
2008: Kyle Lohse
2009: Adam Wainwright

Kind of hard to pick anyone else isn't it? Though the other names up there are pretty good...not a Bryn Smith among them.doe_boy wrote:CARP!

Carp but that’s only because Brett Tomko and Garrett Stephenson weren’t Opening Day starters.

True. We miss a lot of good arms by making it opening day starters only, the great Jeff Fassero among them.Radbird wrote:Carp but that’s only because Brett Tomko and Garrett Stephenson weren’t Opening Day starters.

And lets not forget that weird phase we went through where we decided career relievers would make decent starters (Braden Looper, Todd Wellemeyer).CardsofSTL wrote:True. Braden Looper pitched 199 IP in 2008. That would have been 14th in MLB last year, with 4 more guys between 200-200.2.

That's trendsetter LaRussa ahead of his time again. Ten years before we started having bullpen pitchers as "openers" and the emergence of bullpen dominance, Tony was paving the way.

Hard to believe Kip Wells didn't make that august list.Radbird wrote:Carp but that’s only because Brett Tomko and Garrett Stephenson weren’t Opening Day starters.
