In addition to its other problems, Trump's immigration policy could be attacked as a failure, that Trump could never figure out a way to strike a deal to implement an effective policy to do whatever it is he's trying to do.

The streams of thousands that continue to cross the border sure know how to troll our president.

The latest from WaPo on the Nielsen firing and the rest:
"He was politically grandstanding for his base, for his reelection, and not thinking through a plan," said Domingo Garcia, president of the League of United Latin American Citizens, who has met with White House senior adviser Jared Kushner, the president's son-in-law, to discuss immigration reform. "He has no plan except to talk about immigration as a political piñata to score points with the far right. But illegal immigration has increased in the two years he has been president."
LOL. Mueller should start investigating the Guatemalan troll farms.

One of the hallmarks of the Trump "Presidency" has been his insistence on digging his heels in and deepening his base as much as possible without widening it one bit. He's been 52-56% Disapproval Rating for two years running, and has maintained a 38-42% Approval Rating range in the same time. He doesn't spike, he doesn't hit a nadir. A bad spot for him looks like 57/37 in Oct 2017. The deplorable racists like him, the deplorables who care more about their pocketbook than civilization are ok with him, and the rest of us don't like him and will not. He will never do anything that turns off the deplorables and he will never do anything that makes the majority of us who dislike him warm up to him.

Other POTII in the modern era, in their first few years, have big swings. Carter peaked at 70 and hit bottom under 40. LBJ was between 76 and 61. 83 and 52 for George HW. Unlike George HW, however, Trump can't bomb some brown people into an 83% approval rating.

Only one modern POTUS mirrors Trump with an approval rating almost always under 50% and within a very narrow margin for the first few years: Gerald Ford, the only other modern POTUS who was basically put in office by some kind of mistake or glitch in the system.

The country's biggest dweeb gets into a spat with Congressional members yesterday:
'You're ordering me to stay': Mnuchin threatens to not return before Congress after grilling on Trump's tax returns

During a testy day on Capitol Hill, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin was confronted with a barrage of questions pertaining to President Donald Trump's tax returns, whether his department would comply with a congressional request for the documents and threatened to never voluntarily appear before members of Congress again.

Mnuchin and even Trump could be in big trouble. I don't know how hard this lever will be pushed, but it could be used to the fullest extent.
Here’s the Law That Requires Mnuchin to Turn Over Trump’s Taxes, or Lose His Office and Go to Prison

Under Section 6103 of our tax code, Treasury officials “shall” turn over the tax returns “upon written request” of the chair of either congressional tax committee or the federal employee who runs Congress's Joint Committee on Taxation. No request has ever been refused, a host of former congressional tax aides tell me.

There is, however, a law requiring every federal “employee” who touches the tax system to do their duty or be removed from office.

The crystal-clear language of this law applies to Trump, acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney, Mnuchin and Rettig, federal employees all.

North Korea: If US wants to talk, put someone 'more mature' than Pompeo in charge
The shine appears to have come off the relationship now, however. Kwon complained that Pompeo had characterized Kim's speech as being about finishing "working level negotiation between (North Korea) and the US by the end of the year," an interpretation he said was "talking nonsense."
"We cannot be aware of Pompeo's ulterior motive behind his self-indulgence in reckless remarks; whether he is indeed unable to understand words properly or just pretending on purpose. However, it is a very dangerous situation if he really did not grasp the meaning," Kwon said.
"The meaning is that the US should get rid of the root cause that pushed us into a nuclear state and obstacles on the way to denuclearization by its own hands; otherwise no one can predict how the situation on the Korean peninsula will turn out."
He also appeared to blame Pompeo for the collapse of the Hanoi talks, saying that summit "gives us a lesson that whenever Pompeo pokes his nose in, the talks go wrong without any results."
Kwon's statement concluded, "Therefore, even in the case of possible resumption of the dialogue with the US, I wish our dialogue counterpart would be not Pompeo but other person who is more careful and mature in communicating with us."

From this article:
The White House told U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement that the plan was intended to alleviate a shortage of detention space but also served to send a message to Democrats. The attempt at political retribution raised alarm within ICE, with a top official responding that it was rife with budgetary and liability concerns, and noting that “there are PR risks as well.”
Their top concerns with dumping dirt poor migrants on the streets of a large city was that it would be bad for their budget and bad PR....and not that it would be VERY DANGEROUS FOR THE [expletive] MIGRANTS
