The Cards overcame injuries to Molina, Ozuna, and Hicks. Crap seasons by Marp and Bader, and a sub par season my Mikolas. Plus a ton of other minor injuries.

Who gets the credit for them making the playoffs?

I think Shildt deserves a ton of credit.

I have a hard time calling a team with a better RD than us "mediocre" and acting like we're better. I think the Cubs collapse is partially the reason we're ahead of them. Don't have to agree. I knew most Cardinals fans would be too prideful to do that.

Cubs had 27 1-run losses. Come on... lol

Cubs have a better expected W/L record using pythag. Big takeaway here is that Maddon has lost his touch.

Cubs and Cardinals have the same expected W/L record using pythag. Big takeaway here is that Maddon has lost his touch.
27 1 run losses...because they keep signing [expletive] relievers

They were 6th in bullpen ERA while we were 3rd. Probably some Wrigley factors there. Their pen was weirdly good down the stretch. Morrow signing...has not worked out. Kimbrel outright sucks. Edwards Jr. fell off the map. So I agree a little. Maddon a big reason too.

I agree the injuries to the Cubs down the stretch was hard on them.

The Cards have a better Won Loss differential....that is why they actually play the games instead of just running simulations.

They have the highest payroll in baseball (or 2nd highest, depending on what source you use), and they tanked for years to beef up their farm system. You're caught up on the term "mediocrity" but that's just a distraction of semantics. The fact is that they probably won't make the playoffs this year, and they played 1 playoff game last year, after not winning the division.

Maddon is not good. Theo hired him, right? Theo hasn't done anything to improve the team for a few years now. They rode the wave of tanking for awhile, but never built on it.

Kolten Wong has been arguably the Cards' best player this year, and he's been more beat-up than the Cubs players that you mentioned. Ozuna too. Their closer has missed most of the year with TJS. Injuries are no excuse at all.

Closers aren't core players but okay. Yes. I agree they lost the variance game and I agree Theo hasn't done [expletive] to fix their depth. And I agreed he relied heavily on older arms.

Cubs have a better ex-W/L so I really don't get why you even used the term "mediocre" when it's obvious they were managed poorly and suffered a few core injuries at the wrong time. I get it. Team pride. But it's also okay to admit them losing Baez at the wrong time helped us big time.

Curious what Cubs do this offseason. I see Joe gone. Schwarber probably flipped for prospects. Core probably stays together because they would likely be equal or better than Cards/Brewers.

The Cubs are an underperforming team; this is because of multiple factors. The Cardinals were an underperforming team toward the end of the Matheny era; which is a big reason Matheny had to go. His message wasn't working. I think to a certain extent; the same should be said of Maddon. The Cubs have not met expectations for three straight seasons.

They're a little better than mediocre. Happy now?

Truth is, with their resources, relative to the resources of the Cards and Brewers, the Cubs should have been in a comfortable position before Baez ever got hurt.
