The insistence at all turns that it's mere coincidence that pitchers have steadily sucked more at hitting the less they do it at lower levels of the game is baffling to me.InvincibleCakeEater wrote:That's not why they suck at hitting. The designated hitter idea was raised by Philadelphia Athletics manager Connie Mack in 1906, though he was not the first to propose it. The rumors were that he grew weary of watching Eddie Plank and Charles Bender flail at pitches when at bat. Mack's proposal received little support and was even lambasted by the press as "wrong theoretically".

Pitchers have never been great at hitting, but the fact that at all levels of baseball, except for the National League, they don't ever hit, it stands to reason they would continue to get worse at hitting.InvincibleCakeEater wrote:ndistops wrote:The insistence at all turns that it's mere coincidence that pitchers have steadily sucked more at hitting the less they do it at lower levels of the game is baffling to me.InvincibleCakeEater wrote:That's not why they suck at hitting. I have always hated the DH, but it is now inevitable, so just get it over with already.

They're worse because of the DH is negligible.wart57 wrote: Pitchers have never been great at hitting, but the fact that at all levels of baseball, except for the National League, they don't ever hit, it stands to reason they would continue to get worse at hitting.

1965 (pre DH)
.133 .174 .174 .348
2015
.132 .160 .170 .329
People have this notion that pitchers used to be at least competent with the bat and now they suck because of not having to hit, but it's simply not true. They have always flat out sucked at hitting.

I wonder what the overall batting numbers in baseball look like when you compare those two eras? I am too busy/lazy to look it up.InvincibleCakeEater wrote:They're worse because of the DH is negligible.wart57 wrote: Pitchers have never been great at hitting, but the fact that at all levels of baseball, except for the National League, they don't ever hit, it stands to reason they would continue to get worse at hitting.

I'm not sure why everyone keeps saying "well, it's inevitable" as if that's an original or worthwhile thing to say. Why not have an opinion and argue it?
I find the increasing ultra-specialisation of sport boring. It just smooths out all the fun little wrinkles and inconsistencies that make sport what it is. Perhaps if "we" expected pitchers to be better hitters, they'd practice more, and the all-rounder would be a more common thing than a random sack of flesh who can throw 101. I like pitchers hitting. I like the tactics of pinch-hitting. I'm not sure why going from the triple slash of the average pitcher to the triple slash of the average DH is something to be fought for.

As with everything...it depends on why you watch and what you get out of the sport. I personally don't want the DH just because I am set in my ways; but I will adapt. The biggest pro for adding the DH in my opinion is that you'd hate to have your star pitcher hurt themselves on the basepaths or at the plate when they aren't much of a hitter anyway.Famous Mortimer wrote:I'm not sure why everyone keeps saying "well, it's inevitable" as if that's an original or worthwhile thing to say. I hate the DH.
I don't want the DH.
There is more money to be made by players in MLB if you open up the NL to the DH.
The DH is inevitable.
I have better things to argue about, like why Fig Newtons are cookies.
