It's not confirmed but it sounds like the US now has its first case of "community spread," ie, a person contracted coronvirus without having traveled to another country or had direct contact with someone who had.

So here's the unknowable but critical question: How many people in the U.S. right now have it and don't know?
Probably a lot.

China indicates 80% of those infected show mild to few symptoms. Would it be better to just let this play out like any other flu season.
? Stay calm and carry on?

Sure wish I had some cash in my 401K to buy this dip!
Regardless, it might just be the way it plays out. The mortality rate is still somewhere under 3% though it jumps into the double digits in the elderly.

To be fair Trump is a virus that has infected everything that involves public realm, whether we like it or not. To pretend that him and his sycophants don't exist in this situation and players in the US part of the developing saga, is absurd.

Perhaps we move to politics. Or just post links from BBC etc where they aren't as fooked by propagandists that dominate US.

There's discussion in the political thread already.

This is a virus, and there are reasons its likely to spread, as discussed, that have nothing to do with Trump or his CDC appointees, even if they are lacking.

If you want to lament him for how this is handled, then by all means, I'd encourage you to do so in the political thread. If you have ideas on the virus/outbreak/etc - outside of clamoring for a different person to talk to the media - then by all means, I'd encourage you to do it here.

what thread in politics? search function yields 2 posts for "corona" in politics forum.

gov't handling of this is inevitable, particularly if this spreads further, even if whats his face wasn't in charge.

The "Trumps Cabinet and Staff" thread where someone mentions its the coronavirus thread now, I reckon.

Far be it for me to judge how you hooligans act in there/create threads

Yep, I don't see how govt [expletive] up situation can't be involved in US portion of this chat., with travel restrictions mandatory quarantines and [expletive] like that in other countries.
I agree, it get tiresome, especially since it disturbs libertarian sensibilities. In a more normal time, with our govt semi-functional, POTUS politics would be a mere footnote, barely worth a mention ( I believe I tried to note that).

Frankly, I am not too worried about the coronavirus. We've already dealt with 2 rounds of nasty illness in our household in 2020.

That should be a reason to be more concerned.

Realized driving home listening to NPR's excellent marketplace programthat I probably shouldn't be posting in this thread or many others, during busy season. Tired, uninformed, lots of of other stuff going on in life- that StupidLand USA gets under my skin more than normal.

* Anyways, check out NPR program today with segments on the market plunge. They make timely visit to the CDC and give a bit of background on how they work and coordinate. Segment on vulnerabilities of lean, JustInTime based mfg and effect on economy, when a supply link (such as Asia)gets walloped by something like coronavirus.
