Because? If you trust the Chinese, they aren't seeing many new cases in Hubei. And, unlike the Spanish flu, this one appears less severe and, from all evidence, is not a threat to young, healthy individuals.

Nine reasons to be reassured.

• We know what it is.
  We can test for it.
  We know it can be contained (albeit at considerable cost).
  Catching it is not that easy (if we are careful) and we can kill it quite easily (provided we try).
  In most cases, symptoms are mild, and young people are at very low risk.
  People are recovering from it.
  Hundreds of scientific articles have already been written about it.
  Vaccine prototypes exist.
  Dozens of treatments are already being tested.

Liz seems to think it will keep doubling til almost every human is infected? really? Spanish flu infected 27% says wikipedia. Why will this be different?

I think she was more illustrating the speed of the spread than saying everybody will get infected. She literally clarifies her point in the tweet right afterwards.

I know none of this for certain but there are all sorts of reports from China on how they stopped the spread of the virus that include:
Using a.i. and facial recognition to track/prevent exposed people from traveling.
Shutting down cities
Marshall law
Killing citizens that posed a threat
Sticking people in dilapidated buildings
Etc

So China took it seriously.

The problem with not taking it seriously, I guess, is that you’ll end up with millions of infected people. And of those millions, a certain percent will die.

It's making its way down I-5 here in Oregon. Lots of onesyie-twoies in many counties. Even rural ones.

Looks like we should resign ourselves to widespread infection at this point. Stay calm and carry on.
