We're going to have this big second wave as states are reopening (and for the most part, I don't have harsh judgments of that--lots of really difficult decisions). But it's hard to picture sports seasons kicking off in another swell. Any hope I have for there being a season are really dwindling.

Maybe some small bubble tournament featuring volunteer players for teams called The Nurses and Grocery Baggers or something. They'll have Bundesliga and KBO to monitor, which helps.

We're not having a season. Due to the combination of greed and the logistical nightmare of trying to stage this season without people getting infected in the most infected country on earth. I should've voted for the moose option.

Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports that the MLBPA is expecting an economic proposal early next week.

While many of the proposed finances for the shortened seasons have been widely discussed, there's been no actual proposal from the owners. Heyman notes that the rumored 50-50 revenue split is "all but sure" to be shut down by the players, but also that the prorated agreement made in March is equally opposed by Major League Baseball. In addition to the safety precautions set forth in a 67-page document, there's much work to be done between the players and owners come to an agreement to begin the season this summer.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that five executives called the suggested safety protocols in the safety proposal from Major League Baseball "way over the top."

“That document will look way different after the feedback from teams, the Players Association and players,” a president of baseball operations told Rosenthal. The executives specifically highlight six of the proposals in particular: The increased testing, consistency between the protocols when players are at home or away, fewer restrictions at hotels, permission for players to shower at the park, the use of hydrotherapy pools, and keeping indoor batting cages open. As one executive notes, these are just the opening stages of negotiations, but these -- on top of the financial issues -- are issues that will have to be ironed out relatively quickly if it's possible to start a season in July.

You know what this really is, don't you? This is all just a ploy by MLBPA to save wear and tear on Bartolo Colon so he can play when he's 50.

Jeff Passan of ESPN reports that the MLBPA plans to respond to Major League Baseball's health-and-safety operations draft on Thursday.

MLB submitted a 67-page proposal regarding suggested safety protocols earlier this week and the MLBPA will soon provide its initial feedback. For what it's worth, five executives told Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic that some aspects of the proposal were "way over the top," with one president of baseball operations saying that the document "will look way different after the feedback from teams, the Players Association and players." The MLBPA is expected to receive an economic proposal from MLB early next week.

Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports that the MLBPA is "livid" over a recently leaked MLB email discussed in the New York Post.

The March 26 email is from an MLB lawyer to top league officials that "documents the substance of talks between two MLB officials and two MLBPA officials," per The Post's Joel Sherman. Sherman writes that, among the seven points covered, was MLB explaining to the union officials that MLB "would need a second negotiation if games were not played in front of fans to determine pay and claims that union officials understood that concept." MLBPA executive director Tony Clark has said previously that negotiations regarding salary adjustment for players were completed in March. Meanwhile, Heyman also notes that the MLBPA has yet to receive requested economic paperwork from MLB which it requested back on March 13.

Evan Drellich of The Athletic reports that the MLBPA has delivered its response to Major League Baseball's health and safety proposal.

The MLBPA has referred to its response as "wide-ranging" and among the topics it touches on, per Drellich, is "testing frequency, protocols for positive tests, in-stadium medical personnel, protections for high-risk players and family, access to pre- and post-game therapies and sanitization protocols." Obviously, there figures to be plenty of back-and-forth between MLB and MLBPA on the health and safety issues before any agreement might be reached.

The Cardinals have re-opened their spring training facility for "very limited" workouts, per Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

They join the Yankees, Marlins and Rays as known clubs that have opened up their facilities for baseball activities. All other teams figure to follow in short order. Goold also notes that the Cards have committed to paying their full-time staff and employees through the end of June. Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic reports that the Twins and White Sox have also committed to continue paying employees through the end of June.

John Lott of The Athletic reports that the Blue Jays have committed to paying all full-time employees through October 1.

There will be some pay cuts, but only for staff members "above a low-earning threshold," per Lott's sources. The highest-salaried employees will take the biggest pay reductions. Props to the Blue Jays for easing the stress of their own as the baseball world attempts to wait out the coronavirus pandemic.

Evan Drellich of The Athletic writes that Major League Baseball "plans to deliver a new economics proposal to the Players Association on Tuesday."

It presumably won't include any language about revenue sharing, as the MLBPA has called that idea a "non-starter" in negotiations. The two parties seem to be working toward an agreement on the health and safety aspect of the return-to-play initiative, but there are many elements to be sorted out on the financial end. Look for a more concrete update on the process around the middle of next week. MLB is apparently hoping to resume spring training around early-to-mid June before launching a shortened regular season in early July.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that the Brewers will keep their baseball operations staff intact for all of 2020.

There will be no furloughs and only top executives in the organization will take pay cuts. It's a generous gesture, and only a handful of other MLB clubs have committed to a similar plan. Many more will begin implementing organization-wide pay cuts and furloughs beginning in late May or early June.

According to Ken Rosenthal and Evan Drellich of The Athletic, MLB will offer an "alternative proposal" for player salaries during a scheduled meeting with the Players Association on Tuesday.

The idea of a 50-50 split of revenue sharing wasn't well received by the players, as they saw it as a salary cap, so the question now is whether they'll hold firm on pro-rated salaries or possibly work with the owners on some sort of compromise on a percentage-based cut. Deferring salary for 2020 is something the players have discussed to address the owners' concern of cash-flow amid the COVID-19 pandemic, though this could have an impact how teams spend in free agency and arbitration next offseason. Needless to say, the financial part is coming along more slowly than the measures regarding health and safety. There's an informal deadline of June 1 for an agreement, so there's not much time to meet the goals of a mid-June spring training 2.0 and an early-July Opening Day. Something will have to give this week.

The NBA is going to slide right into MLB's calendar, and baseball is going to suffer for it. This is bad if there is MLB this year, but worse if there isn't. Come April 2021 when that boring sport for old people comes around for the first time in 18 months, it's going to be hard to get people excited. Especially off of a lost youth season.

I'm just being curmudgeonly and worrisome, I guess. Baseball can probably be fine, but it's easy to picture the model having to change to something like MLS is now.
