He's always topped the list of Cards I wish I could've seen play. Sounds like his competitiveness stretched beyond the field and into his cancer battle. Rest in peace.

Sad day, we lost a great legend. I'll wear my Cardinals "Gibson 45" t-shirt Saturday. Watching that game 1 of the '68 World Series was one of my favorite sports memories. Just dominated on that day.

RIP Bob Gibson.

One of the fiersest competitors in any sport. Loved watching him pitch. I guess they can raise the mound back now.

RIP.

Shannon, McCarver, Cepeda and Carlton the only ones left from El Birdos now? EDIT: Bobby Tolan too.

There are two (MLB) players I wish I could have seen above all: Gibson and Mickey Mantle.

In a country that has been beyond brutal to black citizens, Gibson overcame an unbelievable number of personal and political hostilities to establish himself as one of the most admired sportsmen and public figures of his generation.

RIP to one of the fiercest, most uncompromising, most admirable athletes America ever produced.

A couple of years ago, I sprung an autographed Hoot jersey on my dad for Christmas. I can still hear his genuinely gleeful laugh in my head.

When I was younger, I always wanted jersey number 45 in any sport. Gibson is...was legend.
My little brother was the same way, growing up in the 70s.... being an infinitely better Pitcher and ballplayer than me, He honored Gibby well.

Bob Gibson was A helluva player, and a helluva man—We’re all better for having him as an example.
