Re: RIP Tommy Lasorda
I had the great honor to meet him once at a restaurant in Cooperstown. He couldn't have been nicer to me and my family. He even asked if we wanted a picture of him with my son. (I certainly wasn't going to impose like that.)
I don't know how many know this, but he had a great relationship with Charlie Gitto. Every time the Dodgers would come into town, on one of those dates, he'd rent out the upper room of Charlie's downtown location and the whole team would have dinner up there.
He could and did light up a room, and he will be missed.

Re: RIP Tommy Lasorda
The NYT obit mentions that, as a player, he was cut by the Dodgers to make room for... Sandy Koufax. I did not know that.

Certainly a baseball icon.
And the reason I learned about blumpkins on this august discussion board.

Re: RIP Tommy Lasorda
I was watching Mike Piazza's Hall of Fame speech on Youtube and during the speech he mentions Lasorda got sent down so the Dodgers could call up Sandy Koufax. Also Piazza was only drafted as a personal favor to Lasorda. Info we basically already knew but its good to post here in a thread honoring the life of Tommy.
