My wife's super power is managing to forget her phone charging cable every time we leave town for the weekend.

I got so tired of not having one when/where we needed it, so I bought like a dozen and stuck one in every room of the house, both of our cars, coat pockets, etc. It's a similar solution to the one I took to feed my ChapStick addiction.

I was watching some Hobbit movie yesterday. I thought to myself that if I had the power to disappear and escape danger, that there is no way I wouldn't kick a few shins on making my way through the battle.

Does anyone know what the "surprise" was in the school lunchroom's Tuna Surprise?

I never found out and now I wonder.

Driving home yesterday. I pass a house down a ways from mine. Kid out front. Maybe 9 years old. Just, alone. I see him around and he’s always alone. This freaks me out because I’ve run the sex offender registry and there’s a few predators within our same subdivision. Side note: is it poor form to print those sheets and distribute them for everyone’s knowledge?

The kid is throwing the ball to himself in the air. which made me sad. Kids don’t really play outside anymore.

I start wondering: What if he doesn’t have a dad to toss the ball around with? No kids around to play with either. Maybe I could get my glove and throw the ball with him. No, that’s weird. I don’t know the kid and people will assume the worst. Okay, maybe I can go for a walk with my wife and my son and make it happen that way. Unless of course, he has a dad and he’s just a POS who won’t play with his kid. That would be weird to knock on the door and explain that to dad. Or maybe dad works nights to support his family. Impossible to say. My tendency is assume the worst.

Becoming a dad opened up some empathy I didn’t realize I was capable of. it’s mostly made up scenarios in my head but it’s like, I suddenly “get” Or feel the heinousness of hurting kids vs intellectually thinking it’s extra bad. Not sure if anyone can relate to that clicking.

Super, I've had quite a few of those situations. I completely understand where you are coming from. I'm only two years in to being a dad, but I feel like I can empathize much easier with other kids. Even if it's a teenage girl, I can empathize with how I will feel when my daughter is that age.

I saw some "What would you do?" episodes years ago where young women were being put into bad situations, like strange men inviting them to their car. I always felt like I'd be the guy making cringe faces, but ultimately only report it to the restaurant or do nothing. If it happened now I'd be sitting at their table yelling at the guy after the first sketchy interaction.

It's a tough time to raise children. We are keenly aware of every potential danger. One of the major roads that I drive on to work has a middle school. I am surprised by how many parents let their <12 year old children walk on this major road. It's pretty busy, but it'd be easy for someone to get thrown in a van in like 5 seconds.

I am also keenly aware how dangerous it is as an adult male to step in because of how it would be perceived. It's a shame, and why I tend to speak up if people overuse the term toxic masculinity or make accusations on people based on gossip with no evidence. I'd like us to avoid having men being even more emotionally detached.
