Even with the official scoring, broadcasters for both teams criticized the infielders for not taking charge of the play, and the Reds announcers noted that Moustakas was playing first base rather than his customary third base. Jeff Brantley, for instance, mentioned that pitchers work on ground balls and covering bases during fielding drills, but not on pop-ups, since they get out of the way and let the infielders take charge of the play. At the same time, Moustakas would have needed to have come in a long way to make that play, but there's no way Farmer would know where Moustakas was.

Thanks. I know pitchers aren't 'supposed' to catch popups. And, far be it for me to criticize pretty well-established dogma. But sheesh. That was an easy play for the pitcher, and a less easy play for anyone else though 3 other guys probably should have made it as well.
