As someone who barely glances at most international soccer news without a comprehensive grasp of how it all works, can someone confirm that Ryan Reynolds will be playing for Wales?

I've always wanted to see a soccer player break the fourth wall while writhing around in fake pain.

Solid deadpool / wrexham combo joke.

You guys I am in a bad place. I am starting to talk myself into the US easily getting out of group, beating the Netherlands in the knockout round and making it to the elite 8. This will not happen, I must not let myself believe. I want to believe. Did you guys remember how unbalanced I get during US world cups? The only sporting event that remotely comes close to making me as emotional about sports as I was pre-2006 world series victory.

Qatar is pulling booze at the last second. Maybe sobriety will help amplify the issues of slave labor and mass corruption, in Qatar and FIFA.

Has there ever been a worse host than Qatar? Or one that more exemplifies how crooked of an organization fifa is?

Also, having been to a ton of college football games, lol at this moronic attempt at keeping people from drinking at games. Qatar is just so dumb. Full of oil and no other skills.

For those that follow soccer, Roger Bennett is having a tour across the US and will be in St Louis with the Wizard himself. That should be great.

Is everyone excited for tomorrow? I sure am. I have divided loyalties so it's going to be difficult for me. This is the most politically charged group in the World Cup.

Qatar was awarded the World Cup due to corruption. FIFA should have dropped Budweiser for this World Cup if they wanted it in Qatar so badly. In the process, FIFA harmed Budweiser financially and Budweiser will either file a lawsuit against FIFA or most likely settle and get a great deal in the upcoming World Cup in the US. To answer AW's question if there's been a worst host than Qatar, that depends on your criteria of what qualities as quality. To the majority of fans, Qatar is definitely the worst host since it's cultural laws are not condusive to the type of atmosphere that World Cups attract. But having the World Cup in a Middle East twenty years after 9/11 is a great idea. I just don't think any country in the region is ready for it. For one, there is no soccer culture in Qatar like other Middle Eastern countries (Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Morocco, etc) but Qatar has money. Iran is probably the only country in the region that has the infrastructure and stadiums and a fanatical soccer culture but obviously can't hold a World Cup under the current government.

LET"S GO USA!!!!! BEAT WALES!

England looking characteristically ruthless and greedy in the middle east. Concerning.

That, and, Iran does not look anywhere close to up for this tournament with everything they have going on back home.

In the first weekish, Qatar has created issues by:
1. banning alcohol sales at the stadium a full 2 days prior to the start of games which is, I mean, can we just call it bull [expletive]. If you don't want booze, fine, have the balls to say so maybe a couple years ago. Not 2 days prior. It's the world cup...
2. allegedly bribing Ecuador players to throw the match.
3. not knowledgeable enough to understand all the nuances of the offsides call that was made with VAR to disallow the goal 3 minutes into game, but....what was that. Maybe the right call but given item 2 and how they got the WC in the first place, and they've just invited so much scrutiny on all their actions going forward.

Have we decided whether it's 'Cutter', 'Cuitar', or 'Caught-er' yet?

I'm honestly wondering if there's a Qatari official there making sure the talking head lady says they are in an 'idyllic' place. That clip of the Dutch newsman John Oliver shared makes it a legitimate question. Don't end up in jail, Alexi Lalas. Don't Step, Dempsey.
