I'm excited too, but they're going to have to make a value for value trade to bring back at least one cost controlled starter and that makes me nervous.phins wrote: ↑July 14 23, 9:48 amI am almost as excited to be sellers as some years where we are playoff contention, but really more also-rans.
As a prospect dork, the allure of selling for prospect value at the deadline is exciting. The dread of Mozeliak getting back a bunch of pitch-to-contact command-over-stuff prospects is scary.

I’d say the Bader-Montgomery trade worked out well.haltz wrote: ↑July 14 23, 10:39 amSame here, but they're going to have to make a value for value trade to bring back at least one cost controlled starter and that makes me nervous.phins wrote: ↑July 14 23, 9:48 amI am almost as excited to be sellers as some years where we are playoff contention, but really more also-rans.

Edman to the Mariners makes a lot of sense.

I think you are right, and unfortunately I think you'll get what you pay for. His strikeout rate is falling off a cliff. Which makes him a classic Cardinals move.

Yeah I really think Lynn and Cease in the same deal would be outstanding, but from what I'm reading Cease isn't available and I'm guessing that trade starts with Gorman. Lynn seems like a no trainer either way.MinorLeagueGuy wrote: ↑July 14 23, 11:49 amYour guy is Cease.haltz wrote: ↑July 14 23, 11:00 amI mean a pitcher with several years of controlLesson wrote: ↑July 14 23, 10:41 amI’d say the Bader-Montgomery trade worked out well.haltz wrote: ↑July 14 23, 10:39 amSame here, but they're going to have to make a value for value trade to bring back at least one cost controlled starter and that makes me nervous.phins wrote: ↑July 14 23, 9:48 amI am almost as excited to be sellers as some years where we are playoff contention, but really more also-rans.

My original post was referring to someone like Gilbert.
I also think they should trade Carlson to the Yankees for minor league arms. In NY he will rake RH and shoot for the short porch lefty.

I was thinking about this for some particular reason this morning. The last one he probably did move at the right time was Brett Wallace, and that was more than a decade ago.

The Cardinals and Montgomery didn't agree to an extension prior to the season--Scott Boras proposed discussions about it, nothing seems to have come of it. So the window of negotiation closed when the season started, and frankly, it makes perfect sense for Montgomery to test free-agency waters.letsgocards89 wrote: ↑July 14 23, 9:45 amWhy is Montgomery on the block? If the team is really wanting to contend while Goldy and 'Nado are here then they should be acquiring quality starters not shipping them off. I get the desire to move Flaherty but I'm not sure that makes any sense either. IMO they should use this trade deadline as a way to build for '24.
I was hoping that Montgomery would be penciled in as a reliable #2 starter for some time.
