Hernandez Bracket: CardsofSTL vs Radbird

CardsofSTL's The Undiscovered Country List

Desc: Not country music! Shakespeare called the future, the undiscovered country...

vs

Cosmos

Desc: Songs from Jr/Sr HS days which coincided with the Apollo program when NASA & the Space Program were about the only positive current event in the midst of political and cultural upheaval. All were released between ‘66-‘72 except for 1989’s Coming Home which wrapped up Major Tom’s career.

Looking forward to listening to both playlists, but just wanted to throw this out there for extra homework/listening on Rad's list: I am the Cosmos by the tragically short-lived Chris Bell, who was half of the songwriting team in the also tragically short-lived Big Star.

I made my list thinking about space and maybe the future a little bit; hopefully a future where humanity is somehow still surviving. I am not going to vote on this one but I liked the feeling of my list. I also really liked Rad's list which has a couple no doubt classics.

Both good lists. But @Radbird pretty sure the 1989 date is too late for Major Tom. I remember being a pretty young kid when it first came out (I was in high school by 89), and then I specifically remember it getting some airplay after the Challenger disaster. Definitely a huge song in my childhood memories, and the one that put the Cosmos list over the top for me.

You’re right - it was 1983. I was going by the release date of the album I pulled it from on Spotify.

I'm obviously losing the Boomer vote.

A nice contrast of approaches to the same basic prompt.

"Space Cowboy" always throws me off when I hear it because "Hoodoo Voodoo" by Billy Bragg/Wilco/Woodie Guthrie uses pretty much the exact same riff.
