This is almost a separate topic, but Alan Sepinwall is a critic for Rolling Stone and has liked this season of True Detective and seems to have liked the ending, so he linked to his review on Twitter and got this email in response. Spoilering just because it's exceedingly rude. Imagine being this way over a tv show.

I think it’s cool that Shane Gillis is hosting SNL.

The history is he was added as a cast member at the most sensitive periods of online discourse, then fired the next day or so when podcast audio of him surfaced using an Asian slur on an old podcast (it was bad, but he was doing a character).

Seems like a good moment for the alt-right and hack comedians complaining about cancel culture. And for the most reactionary of the online offended. Reassess.

In my experience the fog is lifting a bit.

I don't know how hot this take is but I've been rewatching The Bear and I think it's a top 10, maybe top 5 all-time tv show.

I got to the Fishes episode which I was almost dreading because it's so heavy, but it was actually way more enjoyable the second time and I think it's an all-time TV episode on it's own. I'm not sure I've ever seen anyone set up two emotional powder kegs in a movie or an episode of tv like that. I'm sure it's happened, but the way they use one almost as a distraction from the other feels unique to me and it's really impressive. What's also weird is how appealing that party/environment is to me, even as I'm repulsed by it. My Dad's family when they were all together was like a more good-natured version of that, so I'm sure that's part of it.

Then there's all the other episodes which have their own unique qualities and clear cinematic influences, but still work in their own right and as part of the whole show. Great performances, great lines, and better cinematography than most modern blockbusters.

Slow Horses is good. That's my untimely review. Really, really like it.

I was late to that series and binged all three seasons a couple weekends ago. It's really good.

I thought season 3 of Slow Horses stretched my suspension of disbelief a little too far but to be fair it’s almost straight out of the books. Been listening to those once the seasons are done.

Had to recalibrate my expectations a bit and understand that the show and the books are really just MI-5 vs itself. Season 1 and 2 get into that but with the third book and season it’s becoming clear that’s the fundamental story being told.

And that aside it’s just really well done. Gary oldman and Saskia Reeves who plays Catherine in particular.

For the record I don't really care for Gillis that much. I did enjoy the challenge and the timing of that 'is he a Trump guy/is he not a Trump guy' tension he was playing with a couple years ago. Mostly I'm just glad to see comedians being comedians (within reason, and at least trying to acknowledge my normativity) and defying both sides of the tired cancel culture debates.

On the otherhand--Michael Longfellow is an SNL castmember though he never gets on the show. I saw a couple of his standup bits online and liked it quite a bit. He's got a great presence and flow. Often SNL people as standups don't do much for me.

Seems like they're going to use Kristin Scott Thomas more going forward, which is great. I also think its funny/cool that they get a guy like Jonathan Pryce to do like three scenes a year. He's like 2022 Albert coming off the bench to just hit bombs.

Yeah the Brits seem to be down for that kind of thing. They win an Oscar and then a year later you'll see them on something playing the next door neighbor for 4 episodes.

Taylor Tomlinson has hit her stride on After Midnight. Heavily dependent on the guests, but usually pretty fun. I used to watch some late night clips some mornings, but I’m so goddam tired of Trump bits and this is a nice replacement.

My favorite has probably been the Dicks the Musical guys with one of the Pod Save America guys.
