Re: Hjerpe undergoes Tommy John Surgery
Hjerpe, 24, opened the minor league season on the 7-day injured list before being transferred to the full-season IL Tuesday following the UCL procedure. Since beginning his professional career in 2023, Hjerpe has missed time each year because of an elbow injury.
In 2023, Hjerpe required arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow that limited him to 41 innings in the regular season but returned him in time to pitch during the Arizona Fall League later that year. During the 2024 season, Hjerpe landed on the IL for left elbow inflammation in early July after he logged 52 1/3 innings as a starter and reached Class AA for the first time in his career. He did not return after his IL placement in 2024.
[When] healthy, Hjerpe has totaled 127 strikeouts, kept hitters to a .176 batting average, and maintained a 3.38 ERA. With his limited innings a season ago, the left-hander posted 13.07 strikeouts per nine innings and lowered his walks per nine innings to 4.82 after issuing 5.49 walks per nine innings in 2023.
The left-hander spent time in Cardinals camp the past two springs as a non-roster invitee to big-league camp. This past spring, Hjerpe tossed three innings in two Grapefruit League games and tallied four strikeouts while walking three batters and allowing two runs.

They were hoping the elbow discomfort would go away with rest but unfortunately for Hjerpe it just kept coming back.

That's no bueno. And the early season TJ surgery always feels like it will be two lost seasons instead of one.

Gotta transition him into a reliever. Its going to be 2028 before he throws a full starters workload - just move him to the pen when he comes back and get some use out of him in 2027.Donnie Ebert wrote: ↑April 15 25, 5:56 pmThat's no bueno.
