A's announcers were not happy with JJ

He's certainly in there close, as many players are today - but it didn't appear to me to be particularly egregious.

He does lead the league with 10 HBP already though, so maybe there's something to it.

I don't get it. Backup because why? If he's out of the batter's box, call him out when he hits the ball into fair territory. Otherwise, what's the violation?

The issue is not the batter as Scott is batting. The issue is that JJ is not in the on deck circle or even very close to it. Rather he is around behind home plate getting a look at the pitcher.
The ump told him to move and he did. Can’t blame a kid for trying.

Ah, thanks. That's how much I've been watching this year - none.

Kind of on the A’s to call that out, imo. The umps too of course, but it’s not like it’s cheating. Not sure why the announcers are upset.

I don’t even see an official rule about it and it’s not like they actually made him go back to the circle.

Thought it was funny they were saying he’s almost in the batters box and he’s not even in the pretty wide shot of the batter.

Damnit I'm an idiot. That makes a lot more sense. It would be impressive if JJ could get on base via HBP when he's on deck.
