Anyone follow the tennis tour? (and a confession about predicting matches)

Post by JoshM42 »

With the baseball season in full swing I know this is a long shot, but does anyone here actually follow pro tennis? The ATP/WTA seasons are a grind and the depth right now is wild.

I got a bit obsessed over the winter and ended up building a little spreadsheet for tennis prediction — serve hold %, surface splits, recent form, head-to-heads — basically trying to do for tennis what we all do with baseball stats. The humbling part: tennis has so much match-to-match variance that a halfway-decent model barely edges out just picking the higher-ranked player. Sound familiar to anyone who's tried to predict a five-game Cards skid?

Anyway, curious if there are any tennis sickos lurking in the Other Sports board, or if it's strictly Blues/Battlehawks/golf around here. Clay season's coming up and I need someone to talk shop with. :)

I think they use soft green balls in tennis. Otherwise I am lost.

Following up on my own thread since the off-season's dragging on — I finally put the model somewhere others can actually try it: it's online here, with the surface-adjusted win probabilities I was rambling about. Still very much a hobby project, but it's been fun pointing baseball-style number-crunching at the tennis tour. Anyone else scratch the stats itch in the off-season?

I used to follow tennis pretty closely back in the days of Sampras, Agassi, Seles, Sabatini, etc. Even up into the early days of the Williams sisters. Haven't watched in probably 20 years.
