This will be the 2,511th matchup of the Cardinals and Cubs. The St. Louis Cardinals are 1228-1282 against the Cubs all-time.
Since Oli Marmol took over as manager in 2022, the Cardinals are 35-34 against the Cubs and lead the series for the decade 47-43. St. Louis has not had a losing series record vs Chicago in any decade since the 1990s.
With May's early exit in Thursday's finale at Atlanta, the Cardinals used six relievers. No word as yet if they will make any moves to add a fresh arm to the pen but it is possible. O'Brien and Racjic were not used on Thursday and the only reliever to throw over 20 pitches was Bruihl who went 2 2/3 innings and was the first out of the pen.
The Cardinals also expect Ryne Stanek back from paternity leave to start the series in Chicago.
I’ll be interested in seeing Peterson because the Cubs have been mentioned in trade rumors concerning Sonny Gray, then they traded for Peterson. I’d hate for Sonny to become a Cub, so I hope Peterson does well enough so the Cubs don’t try to get Sonny. Except I hope Peterson gets blown out today, of course.
