Bill DeWitt III on JJ’s extension during the press conference:

“Feels like one down, several more to go at some point.”

Why do the Google subtitles say "Cardinals President John Mozeliak" in the introductions around the 1 min mark?

:D

i am curious as to why they hadn't extended Winn yet.

Walker not really shocked since he has scuffled early in his career but could see them extending in the offseason

I wonder if his back problem/ injuries are the reason for waiting. It could also be that they offered him one and he turned it down.

I don't see Winn as a star and he's tiny with back problems. I think you go through the process with him a bit, but if he'd take a market extension you'd listen.

I also don't see a particular need to lock in Winn. Doesn't seem like his hitting is going to make him "special" and therefore can go year to year with him. The comparable contract if they were to extend him would be something like what K'Bryan Hayes got where you build in a little $$ based on the potential if the hitting comes around but you are basically locking in an elite defense first player. Hayes had less service time when he signed but signed for 8 x $70M plus a $12M Option/$6M buy-out. I think if you account for the fact that Winn is closer to free agency the numbers may change a little bit, but again not something I would run to do just yet.

Walker I felt like they were going to wait to totally confirm this isn't a mirage. It looks more and more like it isn't so it's probably time to talk. If they do go year-to-year then it probably looks less than Gunnar Henderson who has been more consistent ($8.5M) - maybe something in the Jeremy Pena/Adley range which was about $4M the first year of arbitration eligible. From there it could shoot up with a second high caliber season. In terms of an extension, I wonder if it looks like Yordan Alvarez - 6 years $115M signed with 3 years of service time. $7M-$10M-$15M-then $26x3. Feels like those arb numbers are +/- 20% what his performance will earn him and then buying out his first 3 years of free agency for $26M a year - contract was signed in 2022, so maybe hit those with a little inflation and its looking like $26 to $30M over those 3 years. Yordan had WARs of 3.8, COVID, 3.5, and then 6.4 when signing that contract. Walker has had 1, -0.7, -1.3, and on pace for 5.5-6.

One thing that sticks in my head is Oli publicly talking last year about how Walker needs to get to work and do what they've been telling him. That may or may not have been a big deal to him. It doesn't seem like Walker's the kind of guy to dwell on it and they seem to have a decent relationship, but I do wonder. I don't think there's anything wrong with telling a player that directly, but saying it to the media did and does rub me the wrong way.

Of course if I had to bet on who's here for longer should they extend him, that's easily Walker.
