In no way saying Bloom isn't trying to make things happen or complaining about him, but this has the feel of the days of Mo where we waited for something to happen at the deadline but nothing did.
What's the best possible return you could realistically expect from someone the Cards are likely to trade? I don't think there'd be much to get excited about, either way.

The path to contention is buying not selling. Selling is the last resort of failing franchises.
Is it, though? And just not a result of natural cyclical results of aging?

Even the Yankees have been sellers in recent history and are probably the best example of not having a substantial downturn.
Yes, it is. You rarely get much from selling unless the Hunter Dobbins types send a thrill up your leg.

Trading Rutschman to a division rival is one way to do it.

It’s virtually impossible to avoid any downturn unless you can time development + spending perfectly with the aging of another core.

Take this with a grain of salt. I may have been deceived.

Not a done deal

Agreed. One way to avoid a downturn, or shorten it, is to not have an active payroll of $50 million.

The Cardinals have very little talent, which has been well established by this board, so the expectations of getting anything of value back is got to be low. And the May, Stanek, etc level players who have minimal value now has absolutely zero value to the Cardinals in 2 more months. But Yordan Alvarez was traded for a good relief pitcher at the deadline. PCA for an expiring Javy Baez. You can change the trajectory of a franchise with one of these trades of an expiring contract...but in almost all cases you are returning nothing...and for the 0.3 WAR that Stanek or May will provide to a team thats probably fair.

I concur. However, even when the standard of franchises historically (Yankees) sell and they still spend, it is still cyclical. You can still spend money and contend and compete and still get the wrong result. Money helps. But it's impossible to be above .500 and contend for the WS every year.

There are teams giving away players in perpetuity because they’re chasing something better and trying to save money. Those are often loser franchises. I’d prefer if the Cardinals weren’t one of them.

Year 4 in the wilderness with no end in sight. Mostly so Mozeliak could get a gold watch and resurface elsewhere in half a season.
