True, but if he bet on them to lose, then he would be accused of tanking games in favor of money.Cronos69 wrote:Were I a gambler, I'd bet against my team every time. That way, if they lost, I'd get at least a little money back to ease the sting, and if they won, well, I'd feel I helped because I paid for a win.
So if I were Rose, I'd have bet against them every night and tried my darndest to win; thus, I find that interesting.
Rose reveals he bet on the Reds "every night"

Of course, but I assumed that's just another reason why he kept it a secret.obucard wrote:True, but if he bet on them to lose, then he would be accused of tanking games in favor of money.Cronos69 wrote:Were I a gambler, I'd bet against my team every time. I'm not sure there is any reason to believe he is telling the truth now.Cronos69 wrote:Of course, but I assumed that's just another reason why he kept it a secret.obucard wrote:True, but if he bet on them to lose, then he would be accused of tanking games in favor of money.Cronos69 wrote:Were I a gambler, I'd bet against my team every time. No one knows better than a baseball manager that you can't win em all and you can't lose em all. A guy like him would want to win money every time he made a bet. He probably used his first hand knowledge of his team and their opponent (pitching matchups, injuries, etc.) and bet accordingly. And perhaps he managed the games he had bet to lose to encourage that result.

I don't see the comparison. Rose is the All-Time Hits leader and played for much longer than Jackson.sighyoung wrote:Tell me, did Shoeless Joe Jackson ever receive one scintilla of the attention that Pete Rose gets for burping?
I also don't think Jackson deserves to be in the Hall regardless of the scandal.
