Few things about the game:
1) Gooch...yeah, bad
2) Yadi hit pretty well
3) Oquendo NEVER should have tested Beltran's arm
4) Squeeze fell short
5) Carp didn't look as sharp
6) P-Dub needs to start hitting

1,3,4 took the fans out of it.

As we have said before on this forum, after Pujols and Rolen, we need another bat...because Pujols will get walked a lot this year.

EDIT: Plus celebrating all day tired a lot of fans.

I was at the game too, and you sum it up pretty well.

A guy a few rows behind me was passed out for 90% of the game. Still, far too many "Best fans in baseball" left the game far too early. WEAK.

Tags (God love him) hasn't been good singe the start of '06, he shouldn't be on this team while JRod is down in AAA... doesn't make sense.

This team is going to need a Burrell type player at some point this year.

Edmonds is going to come around... but that concussion thing is going to haunt him.

I would have taken this loss a lot better had Duncan started and Tags sat. I usually give TLR the benefit of the doubt, but Tags hasn't had the stuff to start a game for a year +.

It was good to see Johnson throw well.

I forgot to mention that Skip looked good in there tonight too.

OK, I've had a few hours to cool off and collect my thoughts, and I really don't like this team. I mean, I HATE this team.

I have zero faith in La Russa at this point. Let's count the dumb things he did:

1. Start Taguchi
2. Not bringing in Duncan
3. Calling for a squeeze with Carpenter at bat
4. Bat Molina fifth

Pujols, Rolen, Edmonds, Duncan, Eckstein and Kennedy...they'll all be fine. I don't think the latter four are going to have monster seasons by any stretch, but they aren't going to kill the Cardinals. I see St. Louis being the 2003 Dodgers. They had a great pitching staff, which I think the Cardinals will have, but their lineup was atocious.

No kidding here. Derrick Goold said on Channel 5 that all ST long the Cardinals said that Duncan would be playing. There was no "platoon." Lo and behold, So Taguchi is out there on Opening Night while 20-25 home runs is nailed to the bench.

And also, why call a squeeze play when you are trailing by two runs early anyway? If Carpenter strikes out, so what? If Carpenter grounds out, so what? Trying to put the onus on your pitcher to get a run is silly.

Well I don't know why they said that. Duncan's numbers against lefties are atrocious. Combine that with his below average defense and he seems like a prime candidate to platoon.

Were you this miserable when Tags hit everything he saw in the NLD & CS?

Lighten up. LaRussa has had years when he's had, basically, a different batting order every night. He's going to play everybody on this team and, I'd imagine, we're going to see an endless variety of lineups.

I'm satisfied with the squeeze call there. At that point a low scoring affair was still a likelihood.

We lost the game. Not Tony, not Yadi, not So, not any single player.

How are you going to handle an entire season?

Not having Kinney is real dissapointing.

I don't know what to think about the pen, I used to think it was good, but then again, other than Tyler, no one really has "lights out" potential in my opinion, and Izzy is well...Izzy.

Honestly, though, it was the first of 162 games. This isn't news to anyone (in fact, it has been stated repeatedly throughout this very topic).

My only real complaint is So Taguchi. I really don't like the guy anymore. I stopped about midway through last year. I really hope they cut him and bring up J-Rod.

I guess the only problem with that is that it's yet another lefty... that kind of limits our bench.
