No Eckstein next year?

I've written this before, but I don't think the Cards would have signed Kennedy for three years, through 2009, if they didn't intend to keep Eckstein for at least that long as well, meaning a two-year extension (at least).

I love Eck, but the problem is, that we keep signing average or slightly below average players to fill out the supporting cast around Al, Scottie and Jimmy.
We cannot keep doing that at every position. We are stuck with average or below average offense at lf, rf, ss, 2b and C.
We have to upgrade someplace. If shortstop is that place to upgrade. See ya Eck.
