Zito will more than likely have a better year than what he is showing right now, but you have to remember who has the better defense behind him.. the cards up the middle are very good... the infield D is great, and the outfield on the corners is spotty...
however you look at the guys in San Fran and all of them dont get to the ball like they used to... Zito is not as much of a strikeout guy as he was at one time, and he is going to try to pitch to the defense more. that is where the problem is for me...
Look at the D and about the only position I give to the Giants on that would be right field with Dave Roberts over PW/Gooch/Spiez... the others are in favor of the birds with their d...
in the end I think Wells will finish the season with an ERA in the upper 3's as he will get rocked..Zito will finish with an ERA probably in the mid 3's... and Id almost give Wells wins around 15-17 as the #2 horse.... and Zito will probably get about that as well...

For starters, Zito's decline has been grossly exaggerated. Yes, his peripherals are declining, but that hasn't stopped him from continuing to be a well above-average pitcher. Even in his "bad" year in 2004 he had an ERA+ of 105.
I see no reason why he won't continue his success this year. He's in the pitcher-friendly NL West (Petco, Dodger Stadium, AT&T), and the offense in the NL West is weaker than the AL West. This isn't even factoring in that he won't have to deal with a DH anymore.
I'll take Zito.
With all of that said, the Zito contract for two main reasons:
- way too much money. He's good and above average, but I don't think he's elite and worthy of a super salary like that.
- way too many years. It's dumb to commit that long to a pitcher.
I think this topic would have been a lot more interesting had it been done prior to the season, as opposed to now when people are inevitably going to be swayed by the fact that they are off to starts on the completely opposite end of the spectrum to each other.
