And unfortunately the Cardinals only have three players who could bring something like that in return.

They are in one heck of a pickle...

They could always hope A-Rod opts out then shock the world by bringing him in...

Or they could try to trade for someone like Renteria, who GB seems to think could be traded depending on a couple of their prospects.
Don't tease me like that.

Renteria is my all time favorite Cardinal.

Tejada's an MVP candidate though. He could turn much of that decline by himself, although the Orioles refuse to enter rebuilding mode so I'm not sure that's possible.

He was a giant favorite. The Braves only have him under contract until next year (although not a significant amount of $$$ tied up in him) and they wouldn't get anything more than a draft pick if they let him walk. Plus there are a lot of other things, standing in the way, making this a giant dream, but dreams are worth fighting for.

What's the fascination with Edgar Renteria? He's definitely a solid shortstop, but I don't think he's worth trading back for. Not when it means paying him $10 million a year and giving up legitimate prospects.

Renteria is 32. It's not long he's a long-term option. He's making a lot of money. He has a career OPS+ of 97.

He wasn't worth re-signing for that type of money in 2005, and he's certainly not worth bringing back in via a trade, considering it's at the cost we didn't want to pay two years ago PLUS prospects.

The Braves will be losing Andruw Jones after this season. They'll have to pay Renteria a little over $6M in 2008. They won't be dealing him in the offseason. In fact, they'll likely pick up his $11M option.

Eckstein and Kennedy are so similar I don't think we can two of them longterm. With the way that the SS position has evolved into a power hitting position (as well as defense), it seems like there would have to be better options through trade/FA signing. That said, if Eckstein shows that he can produce at a .700 OPS level this year, I would be okay with us giving him a 1 year deal in the 4-5 million dollar range. Somehow I think with our teams popularity he'd be able to command more elsewhere.

And damn do I wish we still had Edgar around... he's such an impact player.

The legend of Edgar Renteria seems to still be growing. He's better than Eck but he's hardly an "impact" player and isn't worth trading prospects for.

Eck or Kennedy moves on fairly soon. The survivor plays 2B.

Perhaps a good SS might turn up in the annual July fire sale.

Maybe Brendan Ryan works out.
