But here's the thing.... (I can't believe I'm about to defend the Yankees) their off-season wasn't about making the MLB club better. It was about making their long-term health better. And they accomplished that a great deal by flipping Gary Sheffield for Tigers' prospects, flipping Randy Johnson for prospects and bullpen help, shedding Jaret Wright for a decent bullpen arm....
Obviously, losing Sheffield didn't hurt because their offense isn't the problem. Losing Johnson hasn't hurt because he's only pitched twice, and poorly at that. Ditto Wright, who's been hammered.
As far as the bullpen goes, the Yankees are the type of team that can gobble up a salary or two if they need to improve their 'pen mid-season. In the very least, they've got some solid arms in there right now with Farnsworth, Vizcaino, Britton, and a good match-up LOOGY like Mike Myers setting up Mo Rivera.
Throw in the incredibly bad luck they've had with SP health (Pavano, Wang, and Mussina all DL'ed at the same time), and some bad luck (a +6 run differential has become a 9-14 record), and it's been a recipe for disaster. But do not sleep on them. They're going to be good by the time it's all said and done, and (this coming from a Sox fan) I firmly believe they'll win that division.

I wouldn't write the Yankees 2007 obituary just yet. That lineup, when health, will be obscene and the rotation, when healthy, will be good enough for them to make some adjustments if needed.
This is why I like the marathon that is baseball. Teams can be horrible in April and become world champs. Teams that dominate April can be big sellers come July. Ya never know...
