cards as sellers in july?

Post by omaha_red »

drill me if you will, this is just a hypothetical..
what happens if the cards never catch their groove and
are out of it by mid season... do they become sellers?
if so, do we even have anyone to get rid of?

ps. i know it's early, i know it's may 2nd.. this is just a question..

Eckstein and Looper might have some trade value.

I don't think there's anybody to get rid of. There's no way you trade Rolen given his rasonable contract, you wouldn't find a taker for Jimmy or Juan. It'd make no sense to trade off young, cheap players like Duncan, Wainwright, Reyes, etc. Carpenter and Pujols are untouchable. Would anybody want Juan, Eckstein, Kennedy? Pujols and Carpenter are untouchable.

I can't see how being sellers would make any sense.

Well, I'm sure they don't sell AP, although I think for the right offer, they would trade Rolen (young 3b or OF).

If Mulder has some good starts we might be able to fetch something for him as well.

Maybe Loop will stay strong and we could pull off another Lou Brock type trade.

EDIT: Problem is, you have to stay competative to keep AP happy. I could see us trying to obtain a cornerstone type player.

If they are this woeful come July, I think they (Card's management) need to start thinking about not merely '08 but beyond.

Do you junk the team, dump as much salary as you can, and rebuild around Pujols, Rolen, and Carp?

There's really not much else on the ML roster that's 'untouchable.'

I'm not even 100% sure Rolen is at this point.

Rolen has a NTC. Besides, he's a guy you want to keep.

I'd let Rolen go for the right deal

Hey, if the Cards could get a couple of good prospects or a couple of young mlers for Scott, they should go for it. That is, if the season goes into free fall before the trading deadline.
