i've hiked the Grand Canyon several times but not for a few years. i would really like to hike Isle Royale. heck, i'd like to hike anywhere right now.

as far as kids go, i hiked the GC with a 7 y/o. And his little sister, 6, has a better temperament for hiking. At 5 she did 4 mile day hikes with me and loved it.

I was there two years ago and a group of Japanese
hikers tried the same thing. They had no clue the
hell they were going to unleash on themselves.

I warned 'em, but down they went.

I've been to the GC five times and each time some group of foreigners (i sound like a xenophobe) has done that. Europeans, Asians, all.

I think it's just that the Grand Canyon is very popular with foreigners. I've seen Americans do the same dumb stuff.

My idea of a darn good time is to load up my back with a week's worth of gear and disappear in the woods. It's tough to get away from it all in the wilds of Missouri for more than few days, so I go to places like AZ, New Mexico, the UP, and California.

Anybody else here share this passion?

I didn't hike as much as I should have when I lived there, but New Mexico is prime hiking ground. There are trails everywhere, and the scenery is just amazing. Summer days absolutely necessitate a good supply of water, but it's always worth it.

I hiked this ridge and peak in Santa Barbara's front range last week, thanks to some local guiding. The sanctioned trails in the front range are great, but all class I. This offered some class III scrambling and bouldering up one peak, then a nasty bushwhack before another scramble up to La Cumbre, the highest point in the SB front range (3985). The return was a 4-mile descent down 3,000 ft through an amazing canyon.

Looks daunting. I hear you need to watch out for cougars out there.

Lined up a late april roadtrip to the Smokies. Little Freedette is going and this time my 71 year old Mom with her two new knees. Mom is an outdoor lover, so it'll be fun to have her along. We'll get out on a longer hike together and some shorter hikes. I'll probably get up early and do some trail running in the AM. It helps to have stuff like this to look forward to in winter.

Ozark Trail, I'm a fan. Winter is nice, no bugs or ticks. Started Courtois section last weekend on a trail run -crossing the Courtois in 20 degrees was a waker upper... I have a goal to section my way down it this year.
