Simply put, while Kozma is at least average in everything, he doesn't have a plus tool, and none of them are projected to be plus tools in the majors.
For the record, I do think he's going to become a major-league player, and a starter at that...but I don't think he's going to become a star.
He'll probably put up about a .285 average with 15 HR and 10 SB a year, all the while playing respectable defense.
He's more likely to become Orlando Cabrera without the SB ability.
If he does that, he will make more money over his career than two thirds of the other first round draft picks - because they won't make it out of the minors (statistically speaking). And of the ones that do, maybe one of them becomes a "star".
So, in that case, it then becomes a darn good pick.

But Rick Porcello or Michael Main could've been a darn darn darn darn good pick because those two have more star potential than Kozma.
But I'm not going to lament the pick--Kozma is a legit talent, and I hope he succeeds.

I agree - if they would/could have signed Porcello. That's who I wanted, but if it comes down to a kid we can sign or a kid we can't...
Interesting day. Didn't go the way I wanted it to, but if the Card brass is happy, then we'll know why in a couple of years.
Ultimately, all that matters is the major league club. I don't care what the minors do as long as the parent team continues it successes of the past several years.

I figured with the new rules it would make it easier for the Cards to take a chance on a signability risk. Granted, you don't want to lose out on not signing someone, but at least it's easier to do so. And if you don't, you get a pick at the same spot next year. Plus, you'd know by August 15 rather than the end of May if you can sign someone.
