Baseball, essentially, is us vs. them. Baseball's not as military as football, but it's us-vs-them.

Are you seriously telling me that Todd Wellemeyer is in the same category as Bo Hart, Joe McEwing, and Simo???

Because, I know I could ask 100 casual to slightly above casual cards fans if they know those names and 95% would say yes. Go ask those same 100 people if they know who Todd Wellemeyer is.

The flaw in your arguement is that those guys that have been mentioned, came to the Cards and found abnormal success more regularly than they were used to. Fans actually believed that there was something in the gatorade coolers in the Cardinals dugouts that made them magically awesome when they drank it.

Wellemeyer has not enjoyed this same kind of success. And I don't think he's recieved a similar response from Cards fans. Look at this thread, most say they aren't a fan. When I originally posted I said I knew I was in the minority. I can't put my finger on the reason, but I can't dispose of this guy quite yet. And it has nothing to do with Stubby Clapp.

When I clicked this thread I thought for sure it was going to be Miklasz's article that was cited. I didn't read through Gould's, but Bernie's was truly awful. To summarize it: Wells(bad ERA), Looper(Bad ERA recently), Wainwright(sketchy all around) = bad, Wellemeyer(scrappy, no mention of his 5.79 ERA as a starter) = good. It made my brain hurt.

Yeah, but who is us and who is them? Remember that MLBPA you don't like? Because they generate the revenue, the "talent" has much more political power than any common soldier or sailor. Organizational chart hierarchies are not meaningful here.

TT, I was thinking the same thing you were. I'm one of the few people who enjoys Bernie's take on things, but this is just another thing that has put me off about him recently. First he decides one day that he is no longer going to defend the honour of King DeWitt, and completely trashes the man. This comes after he has the audacity to say that Anthony Reyes makes Jason Marquis look like a MENSA member when it comes to pitching. Now he's actually scribbling the praises of Wellemeyer? Talk about being all over the map with your opinions.

Actually, I made the list. But those are guys the media deems as scrappy/gamers.

And yes, they're always white.

FWIW, Rex Hudler is the play-by-play guy for the team. Joe McEwing is the equipment manager.
