Billingsly, Miller, Hughes

Post by Gashouse »

So, fortunately, I did not trade for Carpenter. I was waiting for him to have a few rehab starts before I offered the trade. However, I'm having trouble making a trade for another starter. So, I'm trying to dip into the pitchers who are available. Does anyone have any thoughts on who will finish the season strongest between Billingsly, Miller, and Hughes? All are available in my non-keeper league. I need wins and K's the most, but would like to hold my 1st and 2nd place in WHIP and ERA.

I had initially picked up Miller because Wins will help me the most. However, I noticed that he's scheduled to go against Johan tomorrow in the metrodome, so there's little chance he'll get the win. So I dropped him for Bills, who is also pitching tomorrow, against the Phills. But, for the rest of the season, who is the best to hold on to?

My hunch is that the order is Bills, Miller, and then Hughes. The Dodgers are playing decently and the offenses in the NL West are not that great. So, if Bills keeps up the K rate, he could have decent ERA and WHIP and pick up wins. Plus, he has more career ML starts, and doesn't have too many innings on his arm this year since he was in the pen for a while.

The tigers seem to be able to out score anyone => wins for Miller, but the AL Central is strong enough that I'm concerned about WHIP and ERA. Plus, his K rate is just OK. I'm also concerned about him getting tired in Sept.

I have a hard time separating the hype from the substance on Hughes, so I mostly don't know what to think. He's been good in rehab so far, but the offenses in the AL East are pretty good. Maybe Hughes should be ranked ahead of Miller. With the extended DL stint, his arm should be fresh. And you'd think that the Yanks could provide consistent run support for their pitching.

anyone have any thoughts? or any other starters to look for who may be flying under the radar?

I think you should be staying away from Hughes just because he doesnt help you now with your wins and K's. I like Billingsly for a little bit, but I am worried about how well conditioned he will be the rest of the season. He came into camp as a reliever, (although a former minor league starter) so I dont know if his offseason workout plan will have him in shape for the end of the season. Miller will probably benefit the most of having such a great offense to back him, so he will probably end up with most wins. However, I would almost play matchups the rest of the way. The NL West has very few good hitting teams, and some great pitching ballparks, so in terms of WHIP and ERA Billingsly will help.
