OK. Here's my updates. I did a couple things prematurely, but it won't matter much. I went ahead and moved all our pre-arb players into the confirmed category and marked them down for 500k salaries. Some will come in slightly more than that, most will be cheaper than that. Regardless, using that figure puts the payroll a little above actual projections, which the club will easily match and surpass with DL call-ups and promotions. Ankiel is still arb eligible and I'll update his salary when they agree to terms.

The obvious hole is still in the #5 rotation spot, where Anthony Reyes sits now. He won't be there in April, so I still expect the club to add some payroll. We have a plenty of money to spend, but again, not much to spend it on. I don't see any reason from a payroll perspective why we couldn't take on a large salary right now, and the Cards have said as much.

How are we still a 95 million dollar payroll team? It makes me crazy.

Well, we have 19 million tied up into players who might appear in 10 games next year. Otherwise we have a failrly cheap roster.

At least that much. You could easily roll Mulder into that sum.

And then there's the $6.5M wrapped up into players that you don't want to see play even 10 games (Izturis and Kennedy).

None of which anyone could have reasonably predicted would be wasted, apart from Mulder(for those who saw his injuries coming) and somewhat Jimmy Ballgame. Juan was obviously terribly bad luck, and Carp's bit was obviously quite an unpleasant surprise. :?

I already thought Juan's contract was a waste. A lot of people thought Carpenter and Edmonds' extensions were unnecessary, and then there's Mulder's contract. Which was a great idea.

Clement's contract is pretty funky. I've just plugged in the minimums in terms of guaranteed salary, bonus, buyout and option. Here it is in detail if anyone cares.

# 08:$1.25M, 09:$8.75M club option ($0.25M buyout)
# $5.25M in performance bonuses (full amount with 200 IP)
# 2009 option increases to:

* $9M ($0.5M buyout) with 160 IP in 2008
* $9.5M ($1M buyout) with 180 IP in 2008
* $10M ($1.5M buyout) with 200 IP in 2008
* $11M ($2M buyout) with top 5 in 2008 Cy Young vote

I'll make one final update after the arbitration figures come in. At this point, the payroll #'s don't really matter, unless you're just looking for fodder in the pro or anti-Dewitt war.
