I read it as the CARDINALS want the guarantee...meaning they want to pick up the option right now (if that's even possible)

They don't want Glaus to go out and hit 40 and drive in 100 and then say he wants to test the market

Just a couple of points:

1. Scott's injury last year affected his swing and even if he returns to seemingly good health, it will probably be a while before he gets his swing back ... if ever.

2. Glaus has been facing superior AL pitching and in the AL East to boot. Here he'll be facing the NL Center pitching and I would think thrive on it.

3. Lastly, artificial turf is tough to play on in terms of the physical pounding your body takes. I believe Glaus will thrive once again here in St Louis (especially recovering from a foot injury) and Rolen just may have trouble with Toronto's playing field, especially the first time he tumbles on his shoulder chasing a foul ball.

I believe this deal, should it happen, will be good for the Cards.

well, we're giving away part of that salary relief if we insist on 09. And then we're also sending money to them. I wonder how much money this will actually save.

Exactly what indicators are you looking at, that makes you believe Rolen will be more productive then Glaus or even remotely close in the foreseeable future?

Not trying to be confrontational, just interested? I don't see Rolen ever hitting 20 HRs again with that shoulder.

I'm going to guess after we send some their way, we'll save about 5-7 million.

I would like it. Rolen and Tony just aren't going to get along, and that can't be good for the team and we get a good ballplayer in return. He's got good power and I don't think Rolen can hit for power anymore with his shoulder problems.

I just look at 2006 because those numbers were after a bad shoulder surgery. Rolen's WARP1 in '06 was better than all but one year of Glaus, and that was 8 years ago.
