It used to be made with sugar in the states, but it was changed in 80's to save money. This is due to the tariffs, quotas, and whatnot limiting sugar imports. You can thank the farm lobby which wants to turn everything into a corn product.
A guy I used to know would pay top dollar for S. American Coke.
jim jim jim.. i'd expect this kind of joke from leroy or wart.. but not from you..
come on.. you're better than that

I don't know what they do at McDonald's, but cokes there always taste the best.

This makes me sad...I thought all midwesterners called it pop
The entirety of the midwest calls it pop, St. Louis is a bizarre aberration in this aspect.
It looks like there's a good chunk of Wisconsin that calls it soda.

I grew up calling it pop, but now I use soda. However it still comes out of the pop machine.

My family is from the Midwest, and nary a one of my family members call it "pop". That's why it confuses me that "pop" is always associated with the Midwest.

I don't think I've ever heard "pop", at least west and north of Madison.

Actually I have heard it called "Sody-pop" where I am from, shortened to "Sody".

Maybe in the middle ages. It's definitely at least 85% minimum soda today. I know of only one person who says Sod-y, and he's 55.

OK, I'm from the South and every soft drink is called "Coke." Maybe it has something to do with the overwhelming popularity of Coca-Cola, which originated in Atlanta, kind of like a lot of older people used to call all refrigerators a "Frigidaire." It really does not make a lot of sense, but we still call it all "Coke." Now there is another option. A lot of southerners, mostly older ones in my experience, call soft drinks "cold drinks" (which when spoken, the word "cold" is emphasized and the two words are almost fused together into one), as in, "Let's go down to the store and get a colddrink."

As for my preferences, I like most soft drinks. In the cola family I prefer Pepsi (and yes they do taste different). I'll usually order a cola at restaurants if they don't have good sweet tea. But if I stop at a convenience store or something, I'll usually choose either a Mt. Dew, Orange, or Peach Soda. But then I also love Root Beer and Cream Soda (although it's not always easy to find Cream Soda, at least around here). I have to draw the line with diet drinks, though. The aftertaste kills it for me.

Every single person in my family calls it sod-y, even my little nieces and nephews.
