If he is a Type A, that will be about $2 million to sign the picks, and that may cause to go cheap on our picks, and not really have too much of a net gain anyway.
We aren't very good at producing young pitching talent, at least not lately we haven't been, perhaps we could use him as a chip to acquire a young starter who throws a sinker.
Just my .02...
Wouldn't he really have to crap the bed quite a bit from here on out to not be a type A?
In my opinion, yes. I'm merely saying there's no guarantee of that happening (Type A), just like there is no guarantee of making the playoffs. If it's me, I probably listen to trade offers at least, and if they can get something valuable for him, I take it.
We can't develop young pitchers very well...but have luck with other people's pitchers normally.
I must admit, a lot of my opinion is based on the fact that I believe Kyle Lohse is going to post an ERA of around 5.50 from here on out, and not be a huge help to our playoff chances anyway.
Of pitchers that have thrown 300 innings since the start of 2007 in the NL, he's 14th in ERA, 12th in ERA+, 12th in Wins, 10th in W%, 12th in IP etc. Last year there were 20 type A starters. That's just the NL, so anyone that switched from the AL could throw things off a bit, but he's got to be a near lock (assuming those are the things Elias looks at, which I think I read somewhere that they are).
I would definitely not trade him for prospects, unless it's 1 top notch guy (which I don't think he'll command). I don't think that the value we'll get for him is equal to the value we'll get through the draft picks.
That said, Mo might not be looking at a prospect deal. It could be something totally different, like trading Lohse for a quality starting SS. We're so close to the playoffs, and with ChC playing Mil anything can happen this week. We could be back in the WC lead by the end of the week.
I wouldn't care about the fan base if I'm Mo. I'd do what I think is best to improve his club. If there is a deal out there that does that, then you have to do it.
You don't run a club based on what some fans might think. It's not like people will suddenly stop attending games.
Uh, you start salary dumping while 2 games out of the WC with the 3rd best record in the league, you are going to royally piss off a lot of fans. Baseball is a business and the customers opinion does matter. If Moz forgets that, he won't keep his job long.

Uh, we're talking one player. That's not salary dumping as it would constitute about $1.2 million or so. And, if you go back and read my post, I said that if Mo felt like he was improving the team, then you make the deal.
Now, if he dealt Lohse and they didn't make the playoffs, they're still in a good position for 2009...and probably better based on the trade he'd have to make to justify it. The fans are smart enough, for the most part (although I always laugh when they talk about Cards fans being the smartest), to see that the team will contend. And once again, there will be over 3 million pass through the gates.
The business won't suffer because of a trade of Kyle Lohse.

I meant trading Lohse as a salary dump, not if some team wants to offer the world for him.
Sorry. That wasn't anywhere in there. I had to assume that any trade equaled a white flag move. That's far from being the case.

If Mo lets the fans dictate what he does, he'll keep his job even less time.
Angry fans with pitchforks and torches are what lead to Chan Ho Park signings.

Cardinals shopping pitcher

A little birdie says the St. Louis Cardinals are shopping ex-Twins pitcher Kyle Lohse for prospects before Thursday's trade deadline, mostly because they're not sure they'll be in the playoff hunt and because they figure the 29-year-old right-hander won't be affordable with high-demand agent Scott Boras. Lohse is 12-3 with a 3.68 earned-run average.

It's not a matter of letting the fans dictate what he does. However, dumping salary in the middle of playoff race sends the wrong message for any business that relys on the good will and pocket books of its fans for its livliehood. It also sends the wrong message to your teams players who worked their butts off to get where they are at. This organization prides itself on being an organization that players want to play for (to the point of overhype).
Trading Lohse for fringe prospects would be viewed as a salary dump. Now working some creative trades that in theory may strengthen the team for 2008 and beyond, would be different.
I agree with you - you aren't likely to get much better than you would get with compensation picks anyway.
