That's pretty well put. These types of places (Dubai, Las Vegas, etc...) just aren't for me. I understand the attraction of a place like Vegas, but I don't gamble outside of a friendly card game and it bothers me to see nature rearranged so much. Green grass in places like Vegas just irks me off to no end.
And Dubai has taken it to an entirely new level.
Vegas is the best Dubai comparison. Personally, the American southwest is a favorite place to visit. Vegas is spectacle worth seeing at least once. The kitschy-ness is cool. But I like it mainly because its a cheap place to fly into and then visit the Grand Canyon, Zion or other places. in a roundabout way, Vegas does a bit to preserve the natural attractions.
True Vegas gets a largely disproportianate share of precious commodities in the Southwest - like water...(Water runs uphill to money) seems like a waste, but not so much when you consider how many thousands (millions?) that excess is spread amongst. It may be better to herd the cattle there than to let them graze - then we would need more roads, restaurants, golf courses all over the southwest, in more places they don't belong.
Dubai arguably is going to be the best tourist destination in the world. They don't have any natural beauty spots and so they are building stuffs that world has never ever dreamed on. Plus they have crazy money of which they dont know what to do with it. What's wrong with this?

If they didn't get into the tourist industry, they wouldn't have money much longer. Oil is a pretty small portion of their economy.
Their Sheik was very forward thinking, and smart to do this sort of endeavor, in an area that really had no competition. Plus, they recently opened an energy exchance (in October I believe) similar to the New York Mercantile Exchange, that exchanges futures contract in oil (big contracts, so they do not directly compete with the NYMEX). This is the third large oil exchange joing New York and London, and is in a great location to capitalize on the market.

Nothing wrong with it, but it's just not going to be everyone's cup of tea. For many (myself included) I much prefer to go somewhere that showcases its culture and history, and has nature and natural beauty. Modern and new and extravagent projects will surely appeal to many (obviously Vegas and Disney are hugely popular tourist destinations), but it just depends on your cup of tea.
I'd also venture to say that Abu Dhabi will give Dubai a serious run for its money. The things that Abu Dhabi is planning are much more interesting, to me at least. I guess Abu Dhabi is planning to do it more with a focus on culture (new and old), building some very impressive museums and entertainment complexes. Also, Abu Dhabi has a lot more money than Dubai (and a lot more oil).
But I'd much rather go to India 10x than go to Dubai (or for that matter, Abu Dhabi) once.

I like natural beauty and all but I am crazy on downtowns/sky scrapers. Maybe because I grew up in a place surrounded by natural beauty and didnt had a chance to experience the downtown life. Different choices, I guess.
