Only Christians are able to get their creation story introduced into public schools under the guise of "Creationism". I can't even call it a psuedo-science, because it's not. It's simply the Christian interpretation of creation, yet it gets a sentence or two (and even chapters) in most HS textbooks.

This is hilarious. When's the last time you've opened a HS textbook?

30 minutes ago actually. And you?

biology books that talk about evolution will almost always have an some sort of apologetic comment about "Some people believe there are other theories ... creationism" etc... Sometimes it's only one sentence, but the fact that it's in there at all shows the pull of the Christian right in our school boards.
I've only been going to high school for the last four years. havent heard a single thing about creationism. ever.
That's great. Look in you Biology book and make sure there isn't that one sentence disclaimer about Creationism. Dime to a dollar says it's there.
I would take your bet if i was taking Biology right now, but i'm not. And as a student with a 4.0 GPA and 5 AP classes under his belt, i can guarantee you that theres not a single thing about creationism in any science book. It's barely (if at all) even mentioned in the AP world history textbook. Trust me on this. Like someone else said, i'm sure it varies state to state, but i bet those textbooks that do contain it are at least a decade old.

Edit: i've been to two different high schools, in New Jersey and New Mexico, and I also went to middle school in southwestern Illinois, and everything i've said still holds true.

Although textbooks certainly don't contain anything, the teachers sometimes make the VAGUEST reference to creationism, but they certainly don't say the word "creation" or "religion." which they shouldn't, in a science class.

Sorry to the rest of the board for going off on a tangent.

alcohol is the true gateway drug...

it is a drug, in that is produces changes in your brain and your body, and I guarantee that 75% of people who smoke marijuana probably got drunk first....
but that's a tangent for another day...

almost all pharmaceutical drugs are a synthesized version of a proper drug...they make the drugs by finding the substance in a true drug that does the business and then using that...so most of us know quite a few people that use drugs...

the illegalization of drugs has more to do, once again, with the government trying to establish and govern the purity of it's country: Fascism almost by definition...
there's also this little business about lobbying by pharmaceutical companies, too...but I'm sure that doesn't have anything to do with anything...
just like the Sugar Industry saying that drinking soda doesn't make you fat, even though the average can of soda has more sugar in it that the government recommends for a whole day (the percentage isn't on the can b/c the Sugar lobbyists have deemed it so, even though pretty much everything else on the can has a recommendation)

again another tangent...

I'm really not sure how we can talk about this election without talking about some of these issues, so I'm not sure how this thread could go much differently than it has...

chances are, though, that none of these issues that will be the sticking points of the election will make any difference once either of these pairings is elected...

I would be willing to bet a good amount of money that Same-Sex marriage will be a point that the Repubs try to push hard in the next couple months...an issue that shouldn't be a federal issue, but it will get a lot of people out to vote, just like abortion did for Bush...McCain adding an extreme Right-winger like Palin just makes me more confident that this will happen...

I went to Catholic schools, and was not taught creationism, I got a degree in Anthropology, so creationism is something I have issues with, yet my wife and her family steadfastly believe in it. So, that is something we don't talk about. I don't look forward to the day my daughter asks me, because I see a big argument with my wife on that one!

In answer to an earlier question, I don't see any reason why any "hunter" needs a semiautomatic weapon. These assault rifles need to be banned.

I had an AP lit teacher in HS a few years back that actually had us bring in a bible....
I didn't have a problem with it b/c it was contained within a section of the class where we also studied Greek mythology (and I must say the similarities in stories are amazing)...

she was quite religious, though, and still tried to push the bible's ideas a little harder than she should have, but we all signed a waiver, and we were all intelligent (mostly) persons who realized that we were studying the bible educationally, on it's literary merits and comparing it to other mythologies and stories (like Chaucer and Homer) so the teacher trying to push religion didn't bother me that much (although we had other disagreements when she also tried to push Alice Walker on us, a known rascist)

that was in a literary class, though, not a science class...

The New York Times has an article here detailing the Palin vetting process. it jives with pop's earlier post.

That's an interesting article. I had two people say to me yesterday (independently) that they thought she wouldn't make it to election day. I disagreed with both of them, but it's an interesting thought.

I just don't understand McCain's thinking in selecting someone who is under investigation for abuse of power. Supposedly, the results of the investigation are supposed to be released just before election day. Now maybe they know what the result is going to be already (after all, Alaska and political corruption are quite well known to one another).

But if it's true that McCain had intended to choose 2 or 3 other people and was vetoed by influential people, and if that story gets out there, it will really call into question both his ability and willingness to be an independent-minded president (part of his appeal to many).

And I don't know how in the world she has gotten away with saying, "I told Congress, thanks but no thanks on that bridge to nowhere." First of all, she still has that money and is just going to allocate it to other projects in Alaska. And secondly, she campaigned for governor in support of the bridge!
