But rather as a series of parables. Portions of the creation story, Cain and Abel, tower of Babel, Methuzela living to be like 900 years old, Noah's ark, etc.
Just like everything else, there are many different ways to interpret what you read in the Bible.

But many of the interpretations tend to be convenient or self-serving to individual followers' beliefs. And when it's more self-serving to those beliefs to be literal, then it's interpreted literally.

I think most people tend to rely on the things that back their own personal view of the world, and try to discount those that do not.clement wrote:But many of the interpretations tend to be convenient or self-serving to individual followers' beliefs. I think we're mincing words. The "interpretation" of what is "literally" written can vary, from person to person. But of course each individual is going to interpret it according to what they choose to believe. I don't disagree with that.clement wrote:But many of the interpretations tend to be convenient or self-serving to individual followers' beliefs. Re: Obama/Biden vs. McCain/Palin: The Thread
I haven't kept up with this thread for the last 15-20 pages, but my take on Palin.
Seems like an odd choice. A decision made solely for political reasons and not thinking about whom would best be able to step into the presidency should anything happen. I don't know if those political reasons are to get Hillary voters or to shore up the base, but it's not for a future America. (Meaning - even if nothing happens to McCain, I really don't see her as leading the Republican party through the next campaigning process.)
When I see McCain-Palin together, they look like an odd pairing. They don't look comfortable at all. Who stands where - in fornt, behind, beside? When Palin gave her acceptance speech, McCain looked like he was reading over her shoulder; to see what she was going to say or make sure it was the right thing. They are nearly the exact span in age as my sister and father. My father is 73, my sister is soon to be 44 - maybe that's what creeps me out about the pair. I can't see those generations having the same ideas/goals for governing. I sure couldn't see my sister's ideology meeting my Dad's; and it seems that McCain's doesn't meet Palin's. I am given the impression she is more conservative than he.
Nonetheless, I will listen to her and McCain's acceptance speeches this week. I want to see how she handles the national stage. Right now she doesn't appear too comfortable. We'll see.

I was having this debate with my buddy the other day:
Define Fiscal Conservative.
He said Republican
I said the party that doesn't control the Senate the House and the White house.
Seems if you go back in time, the budget always goes to hell when one party has all 3 .

I disagree. You're not mincing words, you're splitting hairs. Or is it hares?

I asked the most a-political person I know (my wife, a working mom) about this choice of Palin. she doesn't know republicans from democrats. Her comments:KyCardinalFan wrote:I haven't kept up with this thread for the last 15-20 pages, but my take on Palin.

- makes McCain look desparate, had to get a woman just for the sake of it.
- Palin makes McCain look old.
- why would she want to do this?
