I personally think hope is kinda dumb. OTOH I think destruction of the environment and opposition to gay marriage is much dumber.

Who said anybody is basing their vote on hope? I admire the way Obama conducts himself, I admire the way he ran his campaign, and I agree with him on many issues.
Why are people hopeless if they're inspired by a vibrant, energetic young man with good ideas?
I think even Obama would agree they should see hope in themselves and their family. Yet, he knows a lot of people will listen to his speech about what could be, if they only voted for him. My point is he's preaching to the people that will listen to him simply because they're down. The road to improving their lives rests in themselves and their family, not Obama. Lots of people don't get that.
Just like lots of people don't have jobs, or have 10 kids while on welfare, or degrade women, or pass blame to a president.

Couldn't agree more. The only thing dumber than destruction of the environment and opposition to gay marriage is being a Cubs fan.lukethedrifter wrote:I personally think hope is kinda dumb. OTOH I think destruction of the environment and opposition to gay marriage is much dumber.

I would think that most reasonable people place whatever hope that have for a president in that context. Not that he or she will magically solve their problems in life, but that they'll be a good or better president and make a difference.
Maybe there are a lot of people out there like you are describing, but I frankly have not come across them.

Of course everyone needs to believe in themselves. But sometimes people need a little encouragement, too. I think people want to believe that "we can do it this way" rather than being scared into believing "we must do it this way". People are down for a reason, and sometimes they just need someone to tell them that they don't have to stay down. If that guy is Obama, then more power to him.robbotis wrote:Socnorb11 wrote:robbotis wrote:

I think that's a reasonable way of looking at it, haltz.

Most reasonable people would. Unfortunately, a lot of American's aren't reasonable. They want handouts. It's tough because all people should have basic rights and privileges. But at the same time, these are the people that make true Socialism too difficult to attain. Their laziness and poor attitude bring down the rest. It just seems to me Obama is playing to these people too much. He's offering them hope without answers. There is no answer to this problem. I think people will realize that in 8 years.
